Domain Registration, Who to choose?
I registered a few domains, and I am going to register another one today. I usually use godaddy because its only $9.00 for the domain.
There are many different registars and I talked to registar.com on the phone. I wanted to find out why they charged $29 for the exact same thing.
They told me that they charge more, because they provide better registration. They said they if I register with a smaller company like godaddy and they go out of business that I will be unable to access my domain or renew it until it expires and then I take a chance of losing it.
They said if I register with them and they go out of business then the goverment has a contract with them to allow people to still access their domains, until they can be transfered.
I'm wondering is this just a load of crap? Or am I taking a risk by buying from godaddy? Is there a chance they could go under and my entire website could be gone?
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
Maybe.....
Check your contract with GoDaddy, and the 'whois' record on your domain.
If you are listed as administrative or technical contact, then you have authority to park the domain anywhere you like through some simple process.
GoDaddy isn't all that small, and they've registered a lot of names - so the shear volume of people in the same problem would lead to a 'mass' solution, unless there's something in your contract that is otherwise troublesome.
The price says nothing; what you agree to is what matters, so check the contract with that company that charges more. Are you going to be listed as an administrative contact? Can you park anywhere at any time?
On the few I've 'known' registered with GoDaddy, I did NOT see the client's name on the domain record, which concerned me. If you can't go through GoDaddy, should some demise befall them, then does the contract state what you CAN do?
Personally, I arrange the domain when I arrange hosting. StartLogic has treated me well through dozens of sites over 5 years (got better as time went on, too).
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
I wouldn't worry about itl. It's a money making scare tactic. If they aren't still serving you in a few years, it's only because they'd been bought ought.
They aren't about to go under. Check the legal papers though.
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
I called godaddy and they assured me that they are THE largest domain registar in the world.
They told me that all domains are registered in my name and they are mine to do with what I want, they just have an option that allows customers to list godaddy as the admin or technical contact and that's why they are listed on some domains as the contact instead of the client.
They also offer a private registration feature which customers pay another $9.00 a year to have their information hidden from the WHOIS database. So anyone in the public who views that domin will see godaddy as the owner of the domain.
Some other companies charge more, but you pay for phone support or other services, like hosting or email thats included with the purchase, some just rip you off. Those services are free with godaddy because I talked to them twice on the phone today.
I guess I'm not so worried about it now, as I was before. It seems like they are cheaper because they are the biggest, and they get discounts themself on the registration of domains.
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
See what they charge for a Windows box running ASP extensions. My fees doubled when I wanted to do that, and then, went up an additional $10/mo.
Not quite the deal it once was, at $9.99/mo Different provider though
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
Are you talking about a hosting provider? If so I use JodoHost VPS they are a very good host, and they are very reasonable. There tech support is extremly good they are all engineers. You can even get them on live chat room, but english is not their first language so sometimes support takes a while, as they try to understand. Its worth it though!!
I would never use godaddy as a web host as they suck for that, actually suck gives them too much credit, at least on their shared packages.
JodoHost shared are only about $8/month and they include almost all of the current technologies for free.

Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
It is just an attempt to scare you into buying a domain with them. GoDaddy is huge and not going to go out of business any time soon. I use 1and1 and like their service.
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
I had very much like to know who is that clown who deleted my post away??!!!
That was a very informative and interesting web-hosting post which took me 25 mins to type and some ill-bred skunk deleted it away without warning?!
Is it Brad or some moderator?!!:mad::mad:
What kind of attitude is this??!! This is an outright abuse of human rights and I demand to know who is the deleter?
If you've the guts to delete my post away without rhythm or reason, you had better had the gall to at least state your name. :thumbd:
Good day,
Xeon.

ROFLMGDMFAO! :D
After all that typing I bet you forgot to click submit. Besides its not gone moderators cant delete your thread physically from the database, only someone with ACP can do that.
If they deleted it it can be restore, but I'm sure Brad has better things to do then delete your post. Unless you said some bad things in it.
Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
besides you are dealing with the internet and if you type something with that much time in it, i always copy it to notepad and save it on my computer before i try to submit it, because sometimes on these big sites there is an error and when you push the back button your posts is gone. it could have been a database error and it didnt get saved.
if you had a copy you could just repost
always make a backup of your important data, and then make backups of the backups and dont use file compression on your important backups too, if you have 1,000 files in one compressed zip and that zip gets corrupt you are s-c-r-e-w-e-d.

I deleted the post because of the multiple inappropriate references. And no, I did not delete it completely. All moderators can still see it.

The discussion about Xeon's post is off-topic on this thread.
I created a thread in the Feedback forum where you can follow up to.

Re: Domain Registration, Who to choose?
Hey DanDaddy....I'm too tired to make another long and informative post only to see folks abusing their powers.
Anyway, if you wanna look for the cheapest domains on the web which belongs to you after registration + free WHOIS privacy protection, visit iPower.com. One domain + extras = US$6.50
Been with them for 7 years and still going.
On the other hand, I sometimes lament at the fact that this forum is being run like how the Myanmar junta runs their country Myanmar. :thumbd:
