Honestly, there is no wrong or right way to type. I have a friend who can type over 80 words a minute with one hand. But, if he uses two, it slows him down. Do whatever is most comfortable for you!

I started by learning to type properly and then worked my style up from there.
I learned to split the keyboard in two down the 'tgb' keys and always use left hand for the left hand side and right hand for the right hand side.
However it takes a great deal of practice...

If you are still using "hunt and peck" or constantly stare at the keyboard while typing, it would we a good idea to take a typing class, or get some software for the same purpose.
Other than that, as a new programmer, your typing speed is unlikely to be your bottleneck--thinking about your problem and coming up with a solution will take more time than your typing. That and your fingers will adjust to using the extra symbols after not too long.
