Maintenance.
No, you're not nuts. And you're not alone. ;)

The time of a search can be dependent upon what you are searching for and the complexity of the search....
Having said that....
If someone is still seeing lots of 'slowness' on this site in the past week or two, please let me know. A number of changes have been made to speed up the site including hardware additions. As such, as of the last week+, speed should be equal to or better than what it has been in the past.
Brad!
I'm still experiencing access problems. Yesterday, the forums were down for few minutes, could not open any, for a few minutes. Can't remember the time exactly, I think it was about noon, local time.Quote:

Yes, I have those access problems too. Also - and this may just be relevant to me - but I often have a strange problem when posting (or previewing something that I'm about to post) where IE simply shuts down completely and I lose the post. This is much more frequent when previewing - to the extent that I don't even bother previewing things any more. The problem doesn't happen with any other web site, even ones that are similar to CodeGuru.
I used to have this problem too (the IE was crashing when pressing submit or post), and quite often at a given point. I was told that it might be caused by an IE add-on, like google or yahoo toolbar, or something similar. However, it didn't happened in a long time, and I'm still having such toolbars (Yahoo toolbar, DAP Bar).
Oh dear - the site has really been intolerable this weekend. Sometimes taking up to 2 minutes to change a page. Or (more often) my browser bar says "Done" when only the background has been loaded!!! Can't anything be done about this??
Yeah Brad, the site is very slow for me too, sometimes it takes age for a thread to load ;)
Edit: Took like 30 seconds for posting this ;)
JeffB
Same here. Answering to post and hitting reply doesn't show the final thread for eternity. Later when I try to repost, comes up with a duplicate. All after 2-3 minutes of waiting.
Have'nt really noticed anything out of the ordinary.
Codeguru seems pretty fast, both at work and at home. (I use Firefox).
Its painfully slow today. I have been experiencing some delay in the past, but nothing too much serious, as today, it takes forever to load a page.
it's not only slow it's very very slow
taking near about 10 to 15 minute to refresh a page 5 to 10 minute to open a page all work is taking more then 10 minute.even some time.even some time temper increases when u want to do some work and u r unable to do it in a particular time
GRRR!!! It really has been unusable for most of today.... :(
It's the www .CodeGuru.com site that seems to be having the problem. The main front page www .CodeGuru.earthweb.com seems to be fine. But as soon as I try to navigate around the actual site, it takes forever!!!
I'm asking our system admins if there has been heavy spider/bot usage over the past 24 hours to see if they can figure out the issue. I'll let you konw when I learn something.
Brad!
I've been having issues already too. It took me 30 minuets to get the registration screen to work, then I couldn't get any threads to load. I had to click the link two dozen times before it even started to load. I tried refreshing FF and that didn't help either. I thought it was just because of my 56K connection.
The virtical banner on the right side is slowing me down too, it takes up a lot of space on the screen and comes back on every single page. Does that banner really have to display on every page? I can understand the main pages, but not every one. Or maybe you can add a cookie to it so when someone clicks "expand forum to full width" it goes away and stays away. After clicking that link a few dozen times its starting to annoy me.
There's also this border overlap issue you got going on in the signature page, not sure if you know about it or not. I attached a screen shot so you can see what I'm talking about.
I like the website though, seems like there is a lot of usefull content.
Amen to that..!! It gets quite annoying when you click to remove the banner ads but they simply come straight back again. I understand that the site is free for users and therefore needs to be funded by advertising - but the nature and the amount of advertising on this site has become very intrusive. :(Quote:

I stop coming here because of the ads and after a couple months, really gave it another try but really, when you only have so many minutes to in your day, to waste them looking at a blank screen waiting to load....smell ya later codeguru.
The Saganesque excuse of "there's billions of posts to sort through" can be drawn like a gun all you want but its shooting blanks for those that have been around long enough. Do any suits higher up ever read this section?
Pages on this site rarely take more than a second or two to load for me. I use both DSL and cable with the results being similar on both. Additionally, I use IE and Firefox and both result in the same speeds for the most part.
Every now and then things will slow down when traffic on the site peaks (or when bots/spiders hit the site hard). In general, if it takes over about 15 seconds for me to load a page, then there is usually something going on that is not normal.
Of course, if you are using dialup, then your laod times are not going to be this fast on this site or most major sites. Research has shown that most people that are doing serious technical development are not using dialup connections anymore.
If you are on broadband and it is taking more than 15 seconds to get a page loaded anywhere on this site -- and if other sites are loading quickly --then you should feel free to ping me with a PM or an email (webmaster AT Codeguru.com.
Brad!
No disrespect intended Brad - but I wonder if this is part of the problem? I use DSL myself (admittedly only a "slow" connection, at 576Kb) but 15 seconds is usually the minimum time I have to wait. Very, very, VERY rarely it will work at what I would call an acceptable speed but typically, I'd say that around 40 seconds is the average time for a page to load. Often (and this happens every single day, at some point) I'll find myself waiting anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes.Quote:

[Edit...] A case in point... after I typed out this message and pressed Preview Post it took 54 seconds for the Preview page to appear...!
On DSL, the times you are reporting are not acceptable. Can you verify that going to other sites, you get load times of a few seconds or less (sites like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com)
And to do me a big favor.... The next time you get a load time > 30 seconds, can you immediately try going to a site like google to see if it loads quickly? This will simply confirm that it is this site and not your ISP (and thus give me better ammunition when talking to our systems guys ;) )
Thanks,
Brad!
I can save you a bit of time here Brad. I've already tried the things you suggested and it's definitely this site.
I know this is going to sound weird - but for me, the site usually works well on a Monday for most of the working day (UK time). However, for most of the rest of the week it varies from being acceptable about 15% of the time, bearable about 60% of the time and unuseable about 25% of the time. Weekends are usually worst.
[Edit...] BTW, I'd describe "bearable" as being 30 - 90 seconds to load a page. "Unuseable" is 90 seconds or more.
I have noticed that ISPs are blocking adware, ppopups and spyware and firewalls are being configured to crack down too. Some of the slowdowns I believe are firewalls closing sockets that need to be open and so fourth. I believe that most of the problem is that were trying to creatively block ads but were also taking performance hits on our internet browsing experience. One of my ISPs actually blocks google! Yiyiyikes! How many google ads are out there again?:(
ahoodin
Brad - a bit more info....
True to form, the site was fine all day yesterday (Monday) and it was fine today up until about 3 o'clock / 3:30-ish UK time. Since then, it's slowed down to a crawl.
As I write, I have 2 IE browser windows open. One is the one I'm typing this response into (Feedback forum). The other is trying to open a thread over on the Visual C++ forum. The one connected to the Visual C++ forum simply won't open any thread. I can get onto the main Visual C++ board but I've tried 2 or 3 different threads there without any success. That browser has been stuck on Opening page: http ://www .codeguru.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7 for 6 or 7 minutes - despite me pressing Refresh about 4 times, so far.
I don't understand why I can get onto the Feedback forum but not the Visual C++ forum when they're ostensibly the same site....
[Edit...] It seems I spoke too soon. It took over 4 minutes to actually post this response - but I did notice something else while I was waiting. Just a theory - but of those who are having problems, how many are using Zone Alarm firewall? I do - and it seems to be the case that if I shut down Zone Alarm, the site works normally. When I re-activate it, I get the slow response times again.
It's probably a red herring although it does seem to be consistent at the moment. The question is - what could be happening on this site to make Zone Alarm start playing up at certain times of the day???
[Edit again...] It WAS a red herring. My Zone Alarm has been switched off for the past few minutes but I'm still getting slow response / no response...
3:00ish UK time would be around 9:00 am US time -- about the time the East coast, US people are all getting online. I wonder if that has anything to do with the slowness. I'm continuing to bring this thread to the attention of our system admins so they can continue to figure things out.
I was told that even more, better hardware is now planned specifically for the forum. Don't know when it will happen, but it is now in the works.
Brad!
I've done that too. Tested not only with sites like google and yahoo, but other forums at least as big as CG (not sure if the name counts). While it took 20, 30, 120 minutes for a page to load on CG (even 5 minutes some days), the other sites were working perfectly. Just a few seconds to open a page. The problem is that one day the site works fine, the next one it's a nightmare to browse it, then few days it's ok again, but then problems are back. This is going on for about a month or perhaps 6 weeks. Something like that. Not sure what has changed in this timeframe (probably a part of this is played by the big ads) but the access to the site is clearly different than a couple of months ago.Quote:

Minutes ago, between 12:00-12:10 AM Romanian Time (GMT+2) I could not open any CG page (I got the "This page cannot be displayed" message), but other sites were working perfectly.
You bet !! And I lost all that I was typing :(
Same here on both counts.Quote:

The problem with the browser reporting "Done" while I only have the background loaded is happening to me almost constantly tonight.
Some times everything is alright. Seconds later these problems return.
btw, I have DSL and use IE. Of the sites I visit, this is the only site that's having these problems.

I'm also having this "This page cannot be displayed" error times to time in the last few hours and its also slow today.
I lost count of how many times that happened to me. ;)Quote:

Seems back to normal now. There may have been some issue while those of us in the eastern US were asleep. Perhaps bot activity or similar was bogging down the server
The Christmas break doesn't seem to have improved things. Saturday, the site was very slow. Sunday - didn't log on as I was cooking the Christmas turkey! Monday, it was quite good. Tuesday was very very slow. Today (Wednesday) has been dire, so far.
Funny. It seems to be working absolutely fine here, in Bangalore.
Just For interest sake.. I looked up access details in my proxy logs.. and found a few interesting things.. At least 66 file requests per CG page. Admitedly most are for the small gif's used on the pages.. (None of which get called from chache, even though my proxy is set to full Chaching, and the files exsist in the chache).
The Largest file, Exculding the primary HTML code (92K) is CG:/RealMedia/ads/Creatives/OasDefault/Symantec Webcast GEMS 1h/360x300 symantec.swf comming in at 52K
and then 2 copies of m.2mdn.net/930640/mrs05094_hors_728x90.swf at 17K each....
After tallying all the downloaded bits.. you get a total of +- 256K for a forum display... then add +- 50K for the Requests and Ack's.. were looking at 300K for one (Very regularly updated and downloaded) page..
On a 56K dialup (<-- which is been updated to DSL 192 on the 10th of Jan) this is over 40Sec waiting time.. Add to this also that it's a shared Dialup with at most 2 other users (My wife, and Mother) I can wait up too 120Sec per page. This is only if there is no delay in the data transfer..
Now when we start looking at reading one of the threads the total page size can climb to as high as 500K ( Adding request and Ack were looking at 600K)
If we start adding up CG users (Ave 400 at a time - Members and guest's) each clicking 1 page per minute, using an average 350K page size, we get a total of +- 140M per minute passing in and out of CG.. or 2.4M per second.. Now if most user do the same as i do ( 2 or 3 CG pages open - read 1st while second and third load) we could climb to 3 or 4 pages per minute.. taking us in excess of 7m per second..
Now my question to Brad and the CG tech's... Is there enough bandwith on the CG servers to handle this throughput.. If not.. Maybe it's time to trim a little fat off of the pages.. I'm almost sure that if enough time is spent you could trim the page sizes by at least 25%. (I trimmed down the additional spaces, That HTML ignores anyway, and reduced the primary file by almost 10%) I also noticed some Scripting that looked to be redundant..
Anyways here is a copy of the logand a excert from the Chache indexCode:Event Date - Time IP User ReQ. ID Type Sent Received Sent Received

Gremmy....
Good information.....
I understand that dial-up users are getting overloaded by the amount of content within the ads. This is true on most major interent sites. Most major sites are being designed with broadband in mind now. Just as it is assumed that screen sizes are getting bigger (no 640x480 anymore...) so it is assumed that people are or will be moving to broadband.
On the server side, there are several people that watch and take care of the bandwidth. They monitor what is happening and make sure that we have the servers and systems to support the usage with reasonable response speeds on our side. I know new servers are added regularly across many of our sites to accomodate this.
(side note) some of the bandwidth -- such as the ads -- come from separate servers rather than from the site servers. That spreads out a chunk of the bandwidth on the servers side.
Brad!
Thanks for your reply Brad.. I take it I'm not that far of mark..Quote:

My Query still is why are none of the Gifs been called from my chache.. I know that certain Characters tell the proxy to rechache the file.. mostly used is "?". Are any of these now been used on CG.. (Logs for october show a reasonable percentage of files been read from my proxy chache..Lately there have been none to little hits on the chache for CG. A ever faithfull CG subscriber...
Gremmy...
As has been mentioned before:
You type a long concise reply to someone's question, hit "Submit" and it goes blank (only background)
Everything you typed in your response is lost ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Simply foolish.
Why?
RCFox - if that happens when using "Preview", things get even worse because the contents of your Windows clipboard get erased at the same time!!
At first, when I typed a long reply to someone, I habitually copied it to the clipboard before posting my reply - only to find that that doesn't actually work....
Nowadays, I copy my response to the clipboard - then paste it into MS Word or something similar, so I can get it back again when the dreaded lock-ups happen.
If you are making a lengthy post it is advisable to type it elsewhere (e.g. notepad) and then copy paste onto the web form.Quote:

Well, today, CG is Very slow (for me at least) and I've been getting The Page Cannot Be Displayed errors this whole day, causeing me to refresh 3 even 4 times before I can see a thread. When replying, or rating, it causes me to sometimes retype everything. :ehh:
Me too.Quote:

I know there is yet another server on order for the forums, so I know more power is coming in the near future.
