Wrong again. I never stated my memory is good, I have frequently stated and keep stating your memory is not only bad, it is completely worthless. And admit it, you avoided the topic : I am correct about the temperatures. Oh, and before I get issues again : sorry for this little piece about politics which probably violates the AUP. But I believe one should be able to give his opinion as it is something that concerns and troubles a great deal of the world's population, including programmers. A road style will not be just the asphalt (or whatever it is made of) but also road marking. And looking at the surface and the road marking can sometimes be enough to have a pretty good idea on the coutry you are in.

If to that you add a look at the road map (is it long straight lines or are there a lot of curves, is the road large or narrow, ...) you can have even a better idea.

I'm not too familiar with asian road so I have no idea what can make them different enough to see a difference between asian roads and western roads, but I can tell you I have no trouble to make the difference between a Canadian road (I've been there in September) and an Irish road.

There is as far as I know one person with the name of Xeon at codeguru (Xeon II never posted, and Xenon's last post is at 04-07-2000 ) and nearly all regular members at codeguru know who you are. I know what I've seen.

This is not that off-topic as having a picture of somone having a road in background could be a way to know where he is from ;)

And as for the example, have you ever seen an american movie? Look at the road style. Are they the same as the belgium roads? I doubt it! :rolleyes: Anyway, I can tell that it's no Irish road.

We don't have roads. All we have is open mud pools. Have any of you ever seen road construction workers? I think it is like the monster of Loch Ness : a lot of people claim they exist, but people rarely have credible proof to support this. :D

I am not kidding, but I seldom notice a lot of road construction workers doing something. I once thought of putting up a website "Road construction workers, do they really exist?", where you could follow the progress of the road works near my work place with jpg's at specific times of the day. Problem is I don't have a digital camera, those things are rather expensive so I can't buy them, and I don't want to risk somehing happening to the one from work.

Do you people also have experiences with this kind of things?

I think Ireland is probably worse than Belgium. I'm not sure any western developped, ... country can have road as bad as Ireland, even more if you consider that Ireland have not been at war or anything since 1922! There's no freezing either.

What I have noticed is that where the road of the south of France can resist big rains for years, Irish road end up with a lot of pot holes after only a few small rains.

And about road workers, they are also some of the worst workers AND planners. Not only they take ages to build roads, doing a poor enough job, but it's also their religion to dig into new roads less than a month after building them. I know this happens in other countries as well, but here it alwyas happens.

As a comparison, back to Canada. There, the roads are really damaged every winter by a real cold. Even then, the roads are usually MUCH better than a lot of recent Irish roads.

From my most recent travel memories, I think Egyptian and thai roads were much better than Irish roads as well.

And I don't feel like insulting Ireland: all Irish people I talked with agree on that.

Oh, by the way : here is substantial evidence Xeon was active at around 11.50PM Singapore time on 31 december 2002. You can set the time to singapore time by choosing 'User cp'->'Edit Options'->'Time offset'->'(GMT+8:00 hours) Beijing, Perth, Singapore,...'. In case Xeon deletes that post, I hereby attach it as zip file. I just want this settled as I do not wish to be known as a liar or someone who sees things that are not there, which is the impression you could get by Xeon's denial.

The roads aren't mud pools, it is not that bad yet as I was kidding a bit. :D But most roads are in deplorable state, and our highways seem to be more sensitive for damage by heavy trucks than that of the Dutch.

Tell me about it. :rolleyes: The same kind of thing happened in my street at home around ten years ago (by these words you can already suspect the poor state now in some parts). They broke open the road for a couple of weeks to renew it, and although not 'within the month' - probably for illustration - but within a couple of months they broke it open again for gas/electricity/water - don't remember exactly.

At my work they are fortunately taking the opportunity to lay sewers while they are busy. However, it seems there planning is complete nonsense. They have thrown open the road for about 1.5 km, which is a rather long piece. This is a busy road in Ghent and the number of lanes is reduced from 2+2 to 1+1. This is a rather long piece and they do not work with so many people on it so on large parts you often see noone.

Theoretically, you can indeed throw open the entire length instead of doing pieces at a time as the rate by which cars get through is determined by the presence of a bottleneck, not the length of it. However, this causes a higher chance for accidents and bigger trouble for bikers to get through. There are a lot of bikers as along this busy road there is a school. On this long piece there are also several cross points so this causes more cross points to be problematic over a longer period of time and again a higher chance on accidents (witnessed one already) when they do a long piece at once over a long period of time than a continuation of shorter pieces.

I'm very upset about it and the whole thing leads to absurd situations. I've really thought of putting up a website on this shamefull thing. The worst thing is that I have received information that engineers (!) apparently keep themselves busy with the planning. I would really like to see these people once. I could give them a copy of a Dilbert comic.

In Belgium you will find many people admitting and complaining about that one too. Road works also seem to happen near election time. I wonder why? Most of the time people aren't thankful but rather pissed.

Simon, for some reason it is bad manners to prove someone's flaw. Out of decency I recommed you drop the subject.

As for road construction in my country, people tend to do something to a 30 foot stretch of road, blockade a 150 foot section around it with orange cones, put a couple construction vehicles in the area, and let it sit for a few months. I guess they think the road should repare itself from here. I dunno. Sometimes these people leave huge bumps in the road while they're "constructing". Still, it is nice to have paved roads, even if it takes decades to do it.

No. Seriously, most folks in Singapore don't celebrate the New Year as much as folks in other countries, especially the Western ones. Yeah sure, some folks do, but most don't.(at least over here)

For the Westerners and the Christians in particular, their New Year was around 2 - 3 days ago.
But for us Singaporean-Chinese, our official New Year is around February 2003. The New Year of the Singaporean-Malays is also on some other date which I can't remember. The New Year of the Singaporean-Indians is around December every year, if I remember correctly. That's why!

So, that means you guys won't see me around February 2003 for a few days. :D

Simon.......what do u know besides coding and linking! Really, I beseech you to find out more about countries and understand their roots and such. Just blindly searching in web sites wouldn't help. The facts might be right, but the truth is that if you don't experience something yourself, you won't be 100% right in some special circumstances. Aye~!
