Thank you, Simon, for the explanations about Xeon, but don't worry, I've been in the forum for nearly two months now and I already knew about him. I still don't know the meaning of "****" but nothing good can be thougth after him using that word aaaall the time. ;)

I knew the painting by Goya, and I didn't choose the username because of the god, just because of that song. Saturn7 was already used, so I had to add the o (in spanish, the name of the god and the planet is Saturno). And, NO, Xeon, Devil Hoping is an album and not a band, and they used to play pop and not heavy metal.

Oh, and saturno7 : gurls has no special meaning other than girls if I'm not mistaking. It appears to be often used however which you can note by typing 'gurls' on Google. If you type it in in conjunction with Singapore one could note that it is probably frequently spelled like that in discussion forums over there. Xeon seems to have made it his trademark of misspelling it.

There are also many Chinese here, hehe.

Welcome, Saturno7! I see you've already taken to ignoring Xeon. Excellent idea. If you don't understand it, or if it seems too fantastical, or involves the word "gurls" or "gurlz", then he's only kidding and you can ignore him. Xeon's used to being ignored, except by eccentrics like me 'n Simon.

Ofcourse I'm not angry at you. What do you wish to know about it? Financing, duration?

The duration of a PhD obtained with a grant in my country can be minimum 2 and maximum 4 years. Mine can be done in minimum three years due to the peculiarities of the grant I have. I you do not have a grant and e.g. do your PhD along your other work it can basically last as long as it takes I think. We have someone at our department who started with it around 8 years ago.

For grants there are several institution which sponsor scientific research. You need to apply for this, prepare a case, and defend this for a commission. You need to have already made a planning and tell what is can be useful for and how you think you will be able to reach your objectives. Personally I think this is more or less ridiculous (apart from telling the use) as you can't really know what you'll find during your PhD and as planning this over a number of years is also questionable.

You can also get a grant from the university without having to defend this if your promotor signs a form stating your profile is OK and he/she has reason to believe you will be able to fulfill your PhD. This is something which I have I think. People have arranged it for me, I do not know the exact details. Let me know what you are interested in.

We have next:
5 years of University studing - high education + may be bacalaver(if U have some average diploma ( > 4.5 if I right remember );
+ 1 year - magister level
or
+ 3 year ( or > ) - aspiranture. And U can get "candidate of science" level. You can get this level only if U will defend your aspirants final work ( some scintific work ). May be it is like your PhD?
And the most high level - is Doctor Of Science
( for ex. Doctor of physical-mathematical sciences ).
And I interesting in education process in University of Europe, but as I have said, we will discuss it some later, if U want :)

We don't give extra levels. A PhD in History is considered has the same degree as one in material sciences for example. Although I think exact sciences are worth more than philosophy for example. Please don't attack me on the latter, I've had discussions with Elrond on that subject already.

That's strange. I could accept that our "doctorat" diploma is translated by PhD, even if I never studied philosophy (ok, one small year). But learning here that there is a Doctor of Science level, which is higher than the PhD!! I find it revolting!

In France we start studying after the baccalaureat (before, we learn!).
And we categorize the difference in years of study, like you can say I'm Bac+5, Bob is Bac+2, Marie is Bac + 10 (well, here she must be studying medecine, and then will not really say this, until she is negociating for being better paid).
You mainly have stages at Bac+2 : University diploma , BTS (Elrond, help me I don't remember what those letters mean), think this level is undergraduate in british system?
Bac + 3 is a licence, then you can start teacher school if you want
Bac + 4 is ... master, magister? people are supposed to call you master, :)
Bac+5 is engineer whether you did them at the university or in an engineer school
Then you can start the PhD stuff... First one year to prepare it (it can be done with the 5th year of engineer school). Then 3 years which I can't detail much, but includes searching, teaching in university sometimes, publishing articles, and writing a thesis.
Then you are a doctor!

I'm no german, but let me try explaining it: a doctor is someone who made a post-university study (Doktorat, in german) -- that is like a reasearch work over a couple of years, with a dissertation.

A professor is someone teaching at the university. It is a title accorded as a recognition of the vast experience in that particular field and so on. Mostly, someone studying to become a doctor has a professor as a mentor. And btw. most professors (if not all of them) have a doctor title.

By the way, I can't give you much detailed information about the education after you're 18 as it is currently being reformed in the light of the Bologna-Sorbonne agreements.

Higher education currently is 3 years for a graduate, 4 years for 'licentiaat' (among which industrial engineer) and 5 years for bio- and civil engineer. For a docter the medical studies take 7 years. That was the situation until now.

Now they want to reform licentiate and engineer studies (don't know what happens to graduate and medical studies) to a bachelor-master conform the Bologna-Sorbonne agreements. There is still a lot of talk whether this should be a 4+1 or a 3+2 system or both depending on the study. So basicly you would be able to study 3-4 years for having a bachelor degree after which you can start working or continue for 2-1 years for specialising and obtaining a master degree.

There are two big reasons why they want 4+1 instead of 3+2 system. One of them is that for some studies, it is difficult to see all the stuff you need in 3 years because e.g. you need to see a lot of theory before you can specialize into a master study, but with all this theory you're not much when you graduate as bachelor and want to start working in the industry. Another reason is the fear of the goverment that in a 3+2 system nearly everyone would want to choose for the full five years making education more expensive for the state.

Oh, and in Belgium you do not need to do an extra time for preparing, this is optional. Because of the cost cuts and because not many people do it, it has been cut since this year. And you need to be a doctor (not demanded, but usually it goes that way) before you can become a professor. Professors are not better than doctors, but take me on my word they usually feel better. :rolleyes: :p

In Spain is rather similar: you need to be a doctor (i.e. having made a doctoral thesis, which is such a 2 years research and work) to be a university professor, even when there are other kind of teachers in University that are not Doctors (so they earn much less money).

Here the University takes 3, 4, 5 or 6 years (this last one is just for medical students. If you study for 3 years you are a 'Diplomado' (is it a graduate?) and if you study for 4 or more, you are a 'Licenciado', what I guess is a bachelor. For technical degrees, you can study 3 years and be a Technical Engineer or 4 or 5 years and be a Superior Engineer (that's what I am as I studied for 5 years - well, it took me 7 years to finish, but it's supposed to be 5 even if nobody does it in 5).

There are other kind of studies - non university ones - which you can choose after the primary school. These are the technical schools which at the moment are gaining popularity. There are also different degrees among them, but I don't know much about it.
