I have to ask you something more. Here in Belgium apart from having a 'title' you're not much with a PhD, as in the industry they consider you having been busy with academic topics too long so you're not in touch with the real world and with an industrial environment. I've heard in Germany they have more respect for doctors and have to be referred at by 'Herr Doctor'. Is this true?Quote:

From what I've heard, having a Dr. title is a sword that cuts both ways: it is, of course, a proof of ones capacity in the particular field, but also implies a "high qualification" -- and the high salary directly connected to it. This makes many employers consider twice if they really need a PhD for a particular job, or if a plain-vanilla engineer also sufficed. A very subjective thing.
Then, of course, there are poeple who think that a PhD is someone who lived too long in the academical medium -- and thus is some kind of theoretician with no practical experience who is likely not to be able to cope with real world problems and will be unproductive in the "real" world of the industry. Of course this is the sort of thinking that is in most cases wrong. However, I've heard many people in leading positions say so.
On the other hand, many PhD dissertations take place in co-operation with, and sponsored by, the industry -- at least at the Fed. Inst. Of Techn. in Zürich. The 'Doktorand' (the guy who wants to become a PhD) gets a problem field or a research area from some industrial sponsor, and his thesis consists of research and innovation in that field -- with a direct applicability in the industry. Many PhDs, once graduated, directly continue to work for the company that sponsored their dissertation.
As a bottom line, PhD is not equal PhD. Being allowed to prepend the "Dr." tag in front of your name certainly gains you some ammount of respect and authority, but I think it is still your CV and your referencies that decide who and what you are.
All this thoughts of mine come from living in a small country like Switzerland and from my limited experience. I might be wrong, so don't take me by word.

For my country you must have:
- certificate of secondary education (school);
- U must deliver some exams to specified University;
- Then, if U've got average evaluation by exams > then average evaluation for all abiturients which had the same exams like U, U become a student.
Usually there are 3 exams. For ex: mathematic, physic, language for technical university. I read that abiturients has exams only in former USSR republics and Israel (nothing strange, there are half part of country from former USSR :) ), but that other countries haven't any enter exams, only average evalution from school attestat is required.
Next is about education process.
I read that students of Europe and American Universities can choose most part of subjects for studing by self?
For my country. We have 2 semesters per year. We have fixing number of subjects for study (we cannot choose). Every semester we must take an examination session (5 exams for me) "attestation" by every subject before session.
We get mark for exams (2..5).
2 - unsatisfactorily, ... , 5 - excellent. Are U have it to?

In Spain is pretty much the same as you have said. We have to pass several exams to enter the University, during the month that we finish the secondary education. These exams take place in the University buildings during 3 days (3 or 4 exams per day), and many people suffer a lot. If you don't pass the exams (average with High School qualifications) you can't go to University. Also you have to achieve the highest rate, because most of the Universities demand a high rate to enter. It's not just a matter of passing, you have to get quite good qualifications to study what you want. If you don't, you must repeat the exams the following year or study a degree that you don't really like much.

Then, about choosing your subjects, it depends. When I started university 10 years ago, I had absolutely no choice. Then it changed to give some choice. Students cannot choose whatever they want, there are even so mandatory subjects, but they have some choice.
Then, I don't know if it works the same in all universities, as each university has its own way of doing things, so I guess both still exist.
About the marks, it is traditional in France that the marks go between 0 and 20 (20 being perfect). It is not always used, but it's by far the most common mark style.

And about exams to enter University, that means I was mistaked about Europe edu system. Is high education total paid for students or they can find any other ways, for ex grants?
For my country we have mostly free high education.
In France, university is not free, but it's not very expensive. You can also have grants to help you in your student life (homing, eating, ...) as a lot of student don't have parents leaving near the university.Quote:

I studied Telecommunications Engineering in Madrid. I finished last september, but I still have to finish a project to be an Engineer. That's what I do at the moment apart from working, and that's the reason why I discovered codeguru. My project is being developed in Visual C++ and, if I'm not able to finish it, I won't totally become an engineer. Anyway, it's not going too bad, I hope I'll have finish by april. :rolleyes:
What about you?. Have you studied in the University?.
In Spain the education is really expensive, at least that's what I think, although I don't think it's cheaper in the rest of Europe. There are some grants, but not for everyone, a few students have access to them. A few years ago it was quite better, but now the government is reducing the economic aid for students. :mad: :(
I'm glad to hear that at least in some countries the education is almost free. It should be that way everywhere.
