I have made a backup CD without banners on 30.6.99
I have made a backup CD from 30.6.1999. I didn't load the banners. It are around 10'000 files. But i don't know how to contribute this CD to others who are interested. I can burn some cds but not hundreds.
We should think about a new way to put code on the internet. We need a free space! Perhaps the CD is of use to start something new.

We need to restart and do it better. We need a free space to post our code to. Has anybody ideas how
We now need a complete free space to contribute our code to all other developpers. When we restart we should think about how we will always remain independently to a person or a commercial organisation.
Perhaps universities can help us here. Or does somebody other has any idea how to start again and do it now right?
Perhaps we start with free html pages on a server. Everybody may alter the files and add new html pages. Somebody makes a backup from time to time an restores old files on the request of more than 5 persons. This can be controlled by a simple program monitored by a group of independent developpers.
These are just first ideas. Perhaps other have better ideas.

We also need a free space to talk
When we start to move away we need a new forum to talk to each other. Has anybody an idea? How can we tell this to all users of the old nice www.codeguru.com? Perhaps we can start a mailing list! I don't know how to do this.

Can Zafir set up a vote for CodeGuru?

Re: A new site for developers...
Sorry, i smell here also commercial interests the sooner or later. Business people do entering where they can. I want a real free space!
Re: We need to restart and do it better. We need a free space to post our code to. Has anybody ideas
You can submit your source code to [email protected]. There is an open forum at the new codejock.com site that developers can use to post their ideas. I will begin work on the submission routines and guidelines, but would like some help with this if anyone is interested...

We all made a big error! - We have to restart and do it better
We all made a big error when we posted our code to a person only. When we restart we have to do it better
Don't add pretty bits for the sake of it.
The contents of the site is much the same from a quick look but someone has tried to tart-up the presentation. Yes the wave line sucks - it is simply an unnecessary gimmick.
More importantly in tarting up the presentation some lines are now truncated. This sort of thing never happened before.
Don't people ever learn; making things fancier than is necessary simple adds to the risk of incompatibilities. Keep it simple. Yes - present the information well, lay it out well, but don't add pretty bits for the sake of it.
It is very noticeable that the adverts now play a much more dominant role on the site.
Please clarify how we remove existing articles
Zafir,
Much as I have appreciated the CodeGuru site and your excellent work over the past years, I find that articles I posted in good faith are now covered by various restrictions that I have never agreed to. Despite your assurances, I do not agree with new terms and conditions. Nor do I believe that I would have posted code to this site had such conditions been in place at the time.
While I am not expert in the legal nicities, I am surprised that you feel able to enforce conditions that I have never agreed on material that I (or my company) hold the copyright of. Whether you believe that the developer.com conditions are benign or not is hardly the point--what gives you the right to assign such conditions on my behalf?
It seems that the steps required to remove articles from developer.com are convoluted in the extreme. I believe that the least you could do is to ensure that anyone who so requested (to you, not them) would have all contributions removed immediately. You should also add this to the FAQ, and not let it be buried in the depths of this board. I actually feel that you had no right to impose new terms on others without their consent, and am saddened you did not consider that the owners of the articles should at least be emailed to inform them.
I am very sorry to post this message as I have benefitted much from CodeGuru. However, producing and using code is my business. I (and my company) cannot afford any possible ambiguitity regarding ownership or use of production code. "Zafir says it's all OK, honest" just doesn't cut it.

Re: Changing look and feel
Sorry buddy, It's too late. It took you guys a week of angst ridden mass rebellion like nothing I've seen before, until anyone decided to give us a feel good message. And you still didn't give us the "plain talk" legal aspect on what we can do with *downloaded* code and what *you* will do with uploaded code and ideas. You guys *still* don't get it. This bodes badly for the future of this site. When you didn't start it right in the first place, that says something about where codeguru will go. I'm outa here and over to http://www.codejock.com. Anyone joining me?
This does not answer the question...
This does not answer the question of whether or not a developer can download and use code that has been designated by the author as freely useable in commercial applications.
