In our case, budgettary reasons. Because politicians scr*w up, they always have to cut in something extra and for now its mostly the military. By the way, if you want to attack Belgium you will have to cross France or Germany or use British airspace, so unless you're America, I'ld say: fat chance. :DQuote:

So as we said earlier it stopped to be mandatory for those having 17 years old last year, I think... or 2 years ago... Around that anyway. :)
As I'm a girl, I was never concerned about it. :) I could apply, if I wanted. And I guess any girl applying will be accepted to crawl in the mud. :D
You could escape the 10 months mandatory service, by declaring you are against arms and war, pacifist or I wouldn't know the exact term in english. Then instead you do one year of special service. OR you can be scientist then you serve 3 weeks normal (learn to hold a gun, do some exercises) and afterward you are set to a task for 10 months I think.
OR You can chose to work aboard, then you have to find a host company (or one of the french embassy), and you stay there for 16 months. This can be good for your job planning, because you can sign for one more year with a 'normal' salary, instead of military wages (which you had during 16 months).
OR you do the normal 10 months in any place they choose, you play the soldier everyday. You run all day for better waiting, you let your brain out before entering, and take it back when you go out... but you forgot your studies knowledge, if you studied.
OR you can declare you have a wife and kids, and are the only support of your family. Then if it is accepted you are exempted.
OR you can delay because of studies, for 3 years at the most I think (then you get back to the beginning for your choices)
OR if you are lucky, and already working, or just out of school applying for a job, and the company really wants you, you can say that if you leave for one year to the army, then your chance of starting an active life is bad, whereas now it's ok, so if you (you write to the army) don't want the unemployment to raise by one because of me, let me work and exempt me. This doesn't work all the time... I had a friend who was in this case. The employer even wrote to Mme Aubry, minister of the Work, and had to do his army...
I think I quite covered the subject. Not bad for a girl who was never interested in the army! ;)

Well, I know now that it is replaced by a civil service, a shortperiod of time, helping administration I guess, or I don't know what. I should consult the gov website to check. Then I think girls are intended to participate too. Maybe they want young people to realise they are citizen, and give them some civic values, and by then make them understand that voting is important!
Gabriel: the reason why I know that, is that I have a lot of male friends, and they talked a lot about that at the end of the studies... Also I worked in the french embassy in Ottawa, and we were in the network of CSNs, who are the one who chose to work abroad in a company or in embassies or consulates. ;)

As for an answer, if you want a beach, you should invade someone. And don't try France because 1) the beaches will be too far, 2) we are far more numerous than you are. We would not even need to use conscription, usual inhabitants of the first town you cross will stop you! :)

Hmmmm...not speaking english at all can be a great handicap in programming, I think. Is there a french version of MSDN? Besides of that, the function names become less intuitive. And the vast majority of the forums and articles on the web are in English, too.Quote:

I don't know about the french translations of important books (Stroustrup, for example), but the german ones are mostly poor. That's why I prefere the English versions, despite speaking german much better than English (not being a native speaker of either of them).

This whole thing actually made me go study computer science in the U.K instead of France, Belgium, Germany or Switzerland...
I do have some programming books in french though, but they are most of the time about algorithmics. But then again, most french writers even write their own books in english :/

Anyway, just to share with you folks what happened to me today.
I went for the compulsory military check-up, and there's around 10 stages. Eyes, ears, dental, body-clothing measuring, height/weight, administration and such, IQ tests, physical penis check-up and some others.

In my last job some of my colleagues had good books translated into french. I think the translation is not bad, but I'm also used to the english version...
In this other site, I tried to tell someone to look up a certain function in MSDN, he had not heard about it!! So we tried to explain him wht it was, another one posted the requested page, and the answer was "What is that??? I don't get a word!!"
I think I'll give up soon... :)

I think Belorussia is not that bad. You do not have those nasty neighboring countries (except when Russia would want to erect the USSR again) or part republics like Chechnya.
