In the past, BCGControlBar was free too, but about 2 years ago, it became commercial and aye....it got the free advertising.

Maybe all article contributors gotta sign a life-or-death pledge or permanant alliance never to make their articles/code/libraries/controls/tools go commercial once they're in CodeGuru.

Also, I would like to suggest to Brad that a li'l section whereby we can post all kinda articles be setup. Like girls to chicken chop and such. This way, CodeGuru gets more advertising revenue from everywhere from all walks of life, and is not limited to a particular group.

The bottomline : Everyone Wins. :cool::cool::cool:

I've used the codejocket exterme toolkit, and I was not too impressed. There are many useless controls in there, and many can be found for free on sites like this. And many of the codejock controls are inferior to the ones found here. The progress control posted a few days ago comes to mind. One thing I did like was thier "masked" edit boxes, which I had never heard of before. Its not that hard to implement, but its a good idea.

The one thing the I really disliked about codejock was the like of help. The help file seems computer generated, it contains no useful information, no samples. It only tells you what the parameters are not much more. You get descriptions like "NULL Terminated string", like you couldn't figure that out on your own. Ah... a null terminated string... now thats what I was doing wrong! I thought your piece of crap could guess where my string ends. There is also descriptions like "Returns a CString". Which, I just have to laugh at.

Yeah, probably see some codeguru code there too. I haven't
looked at his code, but his samples look good; not perfect but I
wouldn't expect that. He also has some stuff that isn't in the
commercial ones.
What's sad with the commercial ones that cost 300 +++ is they
aren't really doing anything original; just duplicating the new MS
look and feel whenever MS comes out with something. I wish
they were a little more custom. Sure some of the stuff 'could' be
helpfull, but I don't think they are worth it; too many free ones
like this and others that aren't complete but have good things.
Then of course, codeguru and codeproject have that stuff and
more.

So maybe an [B]Article about custom controls that don't have the
look and feel of MS and are truely awsome and cool to use[B] :D

Actually, there's nothing new in poor documentation for 3rd party controls/libraries, MWilliamson. :)
I've downloaded and purchased several ActiveX controls and their documentation all sucks like crazy.

They're exactly what you described : no details, just a one-line proto-type of their functions and a 1-2 line description of what that function does. Argh!
These guys prefer to let their code samples do the talking....but samples cannot include everything and we need real documentation!

I agree. But there seems to be one exception, though : CodeJock's menus. They're even prettier than the Windows XP and Visual Studio 2003 ones. If you've seen their ads here on CodeGuru, then you may have seen the menus. The top of their menu has a "tab" look and I doubt even Visual Studio .net has them.

The only reason I would buy these tools are :

1) To give my program the consistent, latest and coolest look in Windows 98, ME and 2000. By default, your controls are dull in these OSes, other than XP.

2) These tools are thoroughly tested....so....I just plug-and-use. :)

I agree that taking something off of CodeGuru so it can go commercial having used the feedback and such from the members of CodeGuru is not right. While I was over the site in March of 2001, I was not directly running the site (I had a site manager that was doing the daily operations at that time). I would have argued against removing the article. At this point this is history.

This is also the case of one article being removed by the site manager of the time. Are there other examples of articles disappearing?

Well, this one was pretty notable. I actually didn't find it again
till doing a google search. You can't get the link from the
advancedui page, it doesn't show up; you can just paste in the
link.

I don't know if there are more. But I don't notice it, I'm not at
the main pages too often. But I suspect the issue is more an "I
can't find it again because I don't remember what section it was
in" issue because some of the stuff is in a different area than
maybe someone else normally would've put it; and if someone
were looking for an article they might just be looking in the
wrong section.

For a quick example these articles are in the "UI and Printing
Frameworks" section and should really be somewhere else (
along with others in my opinion )

I would expect them to be under 'controls' or something, not a
section listed as Framework's, and I probably wouldn't find them
again if I noticed them in passing the first time.
