In general I try not to use any type of ad blocking browser features/extensions because I know that advertising is how sites like these remain free. However, in my opinion these ads are obtrusive enough to warrant blocking them out. That, of course, defeats the entire purpose of the ad itself.
I, too, would prefer having large ads on top and requiring some scrolling than the way they are currently.
This issue seems to relate to Brad's poll on screen resolution.. Probably, the ones most irritated are the ones who use lower resolutions.. and pitifully, I am one of them :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:
Let me ask my manager to place a PO for a giant screen :p :p
As Brad said, the larger square ad will sometimes double and even triple in length, with the width remaining the same. That's why they can't be on top.
When I saw those extra-wide advertisements, I thought they were a temporary bug.
Am pretty shocked to know that many of them are here to stay...
As I write this post, there is this strange obscene creature in the Rational Advertisement occupying a reasonably huge fraction of my screen... And he's here to stay? :eek:

The advertisements certainly take focus away from the content. :sick:
BTW, why don't you at least have an option/button on these "Flashes" to "close" the advertisement?

Even if they triple in length, in my opinion that would be preferable to the current setup. If they were on top, then once you view the ad and scroll past it, the layout of the page uses up the entire window. With the ad on the side, the layout is scrunched to the left. This was slightly annoying with the skinny ads there previously, but with the wider ads it causes an even greater reduction in real estate devoted to the content of the forum.Quote:

That is a Firefox issue that I've pointed out to JPnyc (Jupitermedia Forum Manager). I use FF often here too so I have that issue as well. This was actually a problem before these wide ads were added, so it is unrelated.Quote:

And it must be a bug in the gecko engine. The ad and the content to the left are in 2 separate table cells. Under no circumstances should it encroach on the preceding cell.

The Advertisments are an irritant to those who come to Codeguru to answer queries... The best part of this online Forum so far has been the voluntary contributions that it generates.
This now seems to be getting compromised.
As you already have so many "sticky eyeballs", are there no better ways to increase revenues without compromising on what has traditionally made Codeguru a great place (i.e. focus on content)?
The ad doesn't really interfere with reading forum or thread titles. It might interfere with reading posted code however, but that's why we've kept it off the post level.
I hate sites that have these. I think it is ExpertsExchange is a great example - the ad stays in the middle of your screen until you click to get rid of it. It might be a good site, but I wouldn't know cause that ad annoys me too much to go there. i don't even bother clicking on it when I'm googling to do some research.Quote:

Well, alot has already been said about that. Offcourse the huge ads are huge distraction and that makes people annoyed. The right place for them would be either top or bottom, and the layout should be consistent. I think that putting them at left/right is the worst thing, specially the highly interactive ads try to gain your attention.
The good thing about CG that I like is, its simplicity. Even though there are other forums, but when I go there, I feel like I have entered in some shopping mall, rather then a programming forum :sick: And definately I don't wanna see CG like them as well :(
