About today's China... Well, I think you should get rid of communism. I believe there is not too much freedom of expression there, which sucks. (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe you prepare hard to win the most gold medals at the 2008 Olympics. ;) (But we'll be you again at gymnastics :D) And I'm sorry to say it, but I don't like to buy things made in China. They have a "magical" property of breaking when you least expect it, often very soon after you bought it.
And what's all that talking about nuclear war if USA supports Taiwan? I think some people there should be fired.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I just told my opinion.

Re: What do you think of China
As I heard of, generally live in China is very poor. But considering government efforts and great people resources it's making valuable steps in technologies. Stronger government may lead country to orders more "governmental" success, that is impact of the country, irregarding of generally poor personal life level. There is a "diagram" (joke mainly, but looks reasonable) of lowering the impact of Russia because of switch of economics. Say, under strong government 80% of nation power is directed towards "governmental" needs:
Code:
|-------------------------------------------80%,gov----------------------------------------------|-----------------20%,civ---------------|
USA:
Code:
|-------------------------------------------80%,gov----------------------------------------------|
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------320%,civ----------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
After switch to market economy natural order is 20% for governmental purposes, and since nothing appears out of nothing, it can be resulted only of lowering of governmental resources:
Code:
|----5%,gov----|--------------------20%,civ---------------------|
Now, taking into account decay of USSR:
Code:
|-3%,gov-|------------15%,civ--------------|
P.S. don't notice specific numbers.

I dont think you have much control over choosing what's made where.
I am pretty certain that a sizeable fraction of the PC you are writing from came from China.
Every Semiconductor Electronics Major has a factory out there. Names like Canon, etc make (and have been making since long) high quality cameras and electronics in China.
I am very happy with the quality and durability of these products.
Do you still have doubts about quality of Made In China?

Perhaps, you are talking of things like cheap DVD Players that cost 30 USD?
Well, in that case one gets what one pays for.
(Actually, even these tend to last their guarantee period.)

Where? Only in China, or in the US as well?
(Me thinks: in both places!)
The things I would say need improvement out there are Freedom of Expression, Human Rights, etc.
As a manufacturing hub, IMHO China has shaped itself wonderfully and positioned itself beautifully.
However, these are just my opinions... ;)

You've offended me? HaHa~~~ May be a little, but never mind. I just want to hear your opinions to China from your hearts.
I won't deny that the citizens of China is not so rich as most of your country. And the people is fairly poor in many mountainous areas. But this condition is being improved day after day, by our great party, CCP.
Dear cilu, you mentioned that we should get rid of communism. If you have a chance to come to China in the future, you may know the exact definition of "communism" in our mind, which is somewhat different from your imagination.
You've said "I believe there is not too much freedom of expression there", but in the past 21 years, my expression has never been restricted. And trust me, the freedom of expression here, at least, is no less than USA.
And you've also said that our products have a "magical" property of breaking when you least expect it, often very soon after you bought it. OK, I don't know why. Is the quality of our products not so good as promised? But the products I use work well. And I believe it is just an exception. The products can be exported have no problem in quality.
Thank you all above for giving the opinions to my motherland no matter your comment is praise or criticism.
I love my motherland, because I think it is a great country for it has taken great changes in the passed 20 years. And I hope that one day people of the world will know more about China.
I love programming. Because I think the softwares are bringing happiness to people all of the world. And the goal of us, who devotes himself into IT, is to make the people live more happy by our technology.
OK, Thank you above who gave your opinions.
And any further opinions will be welcomed.
Good Day!
P.S. Type out so much words in English is rather a taugh thing for English is my foreign language. Haha :)
Re: What do you think of China
What I like most is the patience Chinese people show in nurturing Bonsai trees, because taking care of a Bonsai needs a lot of work and patience.
PS. We should do this for every country

Bonsai is a Japanese art, not chinese.

What? Making Bonsais? ;)
Do you know that many plant lovers dont like this (so-called art-form) for it involves artificially depriving a proper infant tree of water and nutrients so that it grows stunted?
I wonder what makes people think that stunting the growth of an (otherwise) 40 feet high Mango Tree in a 5-inch pot is comfortable for the little sapling?
I object, your greatness... :)

Perhaps, true.
Quote:
the origin of bonsai was thought to have taken root in China and then transferred to Japan during the middle of the Heian period (794-1185). When the plant reached the Japanese island, however, regional gardening techniques influenced the development of bonsai in Japan, distinguishing it from the Chinese variety.
But, in the context of the post by Hannes, I must add that it is prevalently practised in Japan, and not in China (the country of Origin) - and usually marketed in the outside world as a JA art.
Or is it still prevalent in China (and we hear nothing of it)?

Well, what's the average salary in your country? I'm curious comparing to Romania.

Perhaps the 2008 Olympics. Perhaps.
My "imagination" of communism comes from my country's 50 years experience with communism. Yes, I was only 10 when the regime collapsed, but I know pretty much about those times.

I mainly talk about textile products (which along with the ones made in Turkey are the worst. EU, and I believe USA as well, have started imposing some restrictions on the textile products imported from China.

I mean no offence, but that depends on each one's standards. Perhaps I expect more that you do. ;)
What I've said about the Chinese and Turkish products is not just my opinion, it is the general opinion in Romania. (At the oposite pole are things made in Germany.)

I was referring to those people from the Chinese army that suggested such a possibility of nuclear war.
PS: BTW, ErwinChen, are you a member of the Communist Party? (Just currios ;) )
PPS: Sid, I think my CAnon A70 digital camera, bought from USA, is also made in China (and no complain whatsoever, so far. ;) ) My DVD Player is for sure.

The problem with the consumer is that he expects to get things cheap, but also complains when he loses his job due to international competition.
Out here (in Germany) there are people aplenty crying foul that Chinese Goods are killing local markets.
But strangely enough, these are the very people who will go to Woolworth and buy a Jacket that costs a measly 7 €s.
It is a classic case of wanting to have one's cake and eat it too! :D
BTW, Cilu, there is very little Made in Germany that the Germans place trust in, today... Correctly said: Perhaps, there is very little that is Made In Germany today!
My colleague Andi just proudly announced (when asked about manufacturing in Germany):

Re: What do you think of China
There are just very much cheap (and therefore low-quality) products produced in China. In 90x Russia (as well as I think many other USSR countries) was overfilled with such chinese products because market of imported things just opened and as most cheap and without that much of competition they were successfully being sold.
Now they are widely forced out by more high-quality products, but in many most poor trade stalls traders with pride place notes on some products: "made NOT in China". :D
