I thought you said the problem occurs when the file does not exist ie

there are 2 cases in the file class: 1 when CUSTOM file exist and the other in which customs dont exist. resourcequestions is a critical file. In the text file you can add anything, just add 3 sentences separated by a newline for it to work at the max potential:)

i use *resource question 1* *resource question 2* *resource question 3*

The problem is in your set text method ie

Remember when I said "Have you tried adding a print statement in the settext method so you can see what text your code is trying to output?" and you said you had. Well you haven't, your print statement is printing out the value of 's' but your talkativetext.setText() method is using the variable textset which is an empty string

ah,you are right! I ve written this part when i was tired.
In the first version i used simply setText(s); but i think this abordation using a separate variable might finally solve the problem. You sir are wonderful and got yourself a place in the credits.

still not working. I spotted the problem, repaired it and still no result. Is there any alternative to setText();?

ok, so after more tests i am sure that not the method itself is problematic but the fact that swing components cannot communicate with the method. Ill try to extend the gui class into another class i'll make and see what happens

I can assure you the problem is not with the swing component, it's with your code.

Please post the latest code and state the exact circumstances which cause the problem.

the code is the same, i just added some talkativetext.setEditable(false); and such lines to be sure that the problem is not created by the setText(); method particularlly. I have no clue what to do next... I tried every way of getting around this, this is just to difficult for me to do by myself -.- . I feel so stupid because i managed to write this project in C with no problem...

oh, yes, more details: create a file in yout resources folder, name it as you wish and add some text in it; next add the text's name into the usertext field, while of course, you are using talkative. As you see setText works normally in this case. But when trying to get a resonse from resourcequestions.txt setText(); just ignores my command.

The problem is you are setting the textfield in 2 different places and one of the values is overwriting the other.

Your actionperformed method calls objectfile.getAnswer() which eventually calls guiob.settextgui(dontknowanswer); to set a value into the text field but when the method returns the actionperformed method then calls String s = objectfile.returnAnswer(); to get the answer and then talkativetext.setText(s); to set it into the textfield. The problem occurs when there is an error and returnAnswer() is returning null which effectively deletes the text from dontknowanswer which you have just added to the textfield .

OOOOOOOMMGGGGGGG! inplooooooosion! OMG WE MADE IT! You made it actually but i made it as well wooo. It was all about adding an intermediate variable to hold dontknowanswer. When dontknowanswer was deleted by reusing the file method the new variable wasn't so it kept the info:D THANK YOU KEANG! you are the best! btw...just a question.. am i doing well for a 3-monther-in-java-without-a-teacher-or-should-i-forget-about0java?

That's not an easy question to answer without knowing a lot more about your previous computing experience but you are better than many after 3 months and worse than others. I would certainly say it is worth continuing to learn.

If I was you I'd spend time some reading tutorials such as the Java Tutorials and good books such as Bruce Eckel's Thinking in Java (the link is to a free on-line version which is a little out of date but the basics haven't changed and it's still definitely worth reading).
