Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
I vote that the 'vote on gun control' is the most intrusive and obnoxious THING I have
ever encountered. You can't move it, get rid of it, or anything. I come back here in
spite of that ##$%%$$$ but pretty soon I will lose all patience and take this site off
of my bookmarks.
-
Please increase page width
As has been pointed out in other notes, the width of CodeGuru's pages seems to assume a fairly small monitor. Most developers use monitors that are 19" or larger. Please change the site's format so that pages aren't restricted to a narrow width.
Thanks,
/ravi

two words
two words for the new site: FE-CAL ! and now the Jobs section points to dice.com ?!? Time to bail...
-
I WANT A CD OF THE OLD SITE
1. Codeguru is dead!
2. I remember, that there has been a CD of the site, which was only available at a trade show in the bay area. Does anyone have this CD.
3. MFC users unite! We need a new site !!!

More on page width (LHS column)
Could the width of the left-hand-side column be increased? The wavy blue background impinges on the main content of the page, making it harder to read.
Thanks,

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
I had just discovered this site a few weeks ago from a friend, and today I come here to this...
Not only are the colors terrible and the site slow, there are many server problems. Just to post this message I had to click the link about six times before I did not get an error.
I hope the new owners of the site pay attention and that Zafir is not the only person reading them, else this site will never be visited by me again.

developver.com: You could have learned from Codeguru, but didn't !!!
Nobody should blame Zafir for selling his site. He did a very good job.
I never found anything useful to a vc/mfc programmer on developer.com
A message to the developer.com guys:
PLEASE, make your site like codeguru, and not vice versa. We all understand that there has to be some advertising. But your website is just slow and ugly!!!
Make developer.com better, leave codeguru as it was, and we all will love your site.
Greetings from J.H.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Does exist any chance to open somwhere the old CG site?
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Bring back the old CodeGuru.com!!!! Did someone make some money from developer.com? I'm disapointed to say the least.

if it aint broken...
Oh dear....somebody's fixed what wasnt broken.
Earthweb??? SlowWeb more like.
So...suggestions
Speed it up and get rid of all the self publicising bollox (and the banner ads but I realise this may be impossible!)

A good example of a bad idea
My fellow developers: This is a fine example of a bad idea. As so many have already pointed out, this is a step in the wrong direction. Most of the people I have met on this site are serious about their work and clearly this site is not a serious place to conduct business. The color scheme is glaring and abrasive, the wavy border is confusing and that speeding car is making me sick. The content is getting lost in the interface.
The site now violates most of the rules for a good user interface and has become a toxic place - one to be avoided.
It's a pity because it was fun while it lasted and Zafir and others who developed this site are a credit to the community. I hope that the people who are in a position to do so will fix this quickly and restore this fine resource to a more usable form.
(If anyone from the site is reading this - Please e-mail me when it's safe to return)

Cant find anything positive to say
In fact cant find anything - the search is crap.
I'll not be here very often anymore
-
Where did the news filter page go?
Where did the news filter page go?
I used that constantly... now I can't find it.
I would have to agree with most of the other posters... though I can understand the economics and the thought involved, it sucks to see Codeguru being taken over by Earthweb. I fear that the quality of what has always been my favorite MFC resource may be adversely affected.
-
Re: Please increase page width
Most pages seem OK, but the new main page is terrible. I have 21" monitors at home and work, and even with a pane on the left for bookmarks, about half of the html display is blank.
Is developer.com accustomed to serving actual working programmers? I can't understand how they could think this is good.
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
-
Re: Speed is important, not look.
I agree with everyone else, this new interface is awful. Whoever made this decision was obviously not thinking of the users. Why did you change it? This was the best developer site around....now it is unprofessional looking and quite frankly an eye sore.
-
I could care less ;)
To be less than polite, as long as the code quality remains as high as it is, I could care less what layout the site has. If merging and updating with developer.com creates a better site, I'm all for it!
Congrats on having the most information...

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
I don't like that everything is slow and/or broken. This really sucks.
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
This site has gone from A+ to F- in just one day.
The only thing I can say is :
'GOODBYE'
-
Well... I hope you have a backup of the old one!
Despite all the obvious work you've put into it, I hope you have a backup of the old site because unless you fix the plethora of problems with this new one (don't ask me to list them, they are far too numerous) or restore the old one, you are going to loose ANOTHER faithful codeguru.com user.
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
The first thing I tried with the new site didnt work.
I searched for "RTF". In the past, it listed useful RTF code samples etc.
Now it says "0 matches", and annoyingly dumps me into developer.com web page, not code guru.

Dude! This Seriously Sucks!!! (Was: Re: Add your comment...)
Man...
I was just about to post up another article (on Edit Controls this time), too! On second thought, maybe not. To help other developers, yes. To help pay the bills for EarthWeb, <B>no</B>.
What the <B>Hell</B> happened?!? Zafir, if you sold the site, and got paid for it, then that is cool, because you started it all. <I>However</I>, if CodeGuru has been sold, then is no longer CodeGuru, it is </I>EarthWeb's-Idea-Of-Developer.com-And-CodeGuru-Combined</I>, and it just ain't working!
Get out while you still can(!), and open up a site under CodeJockey, or open up another new site if you can. If you cannot, ask for help! I am sure that we all could get something done here!
A few problems with the new L&F of the site:
<B>o</B> I do not need the fixed width interface (I do not run my screen at 1600x1200 for nothing, you know...).
<B>o</B> I do not need to be brought to DICE when I look at the Jobs link (I know how to get to DICE if I ever need to).
<B>o</B> I <B>really</B> do not need to see "Developer.com" or even "EarthWeb" everywhere on the site. (<I>Everyone</I> knows about CodeGuru. Not that many know about Developer.com, and even less about EarthWeb!)
<B>o</B> What are we, seasick on a ship?!? Get rid of "The Wave"!
<B>o</B> Can really do without the links to other EarthWeb/Developer.com sites. I know how to get to Developer.com already, thank you. (The site worked fine before, and did sh*tloads better than Developer.com did. Have we learned anything yet? 'Ya got lucky with GameLan, do not mess with CG!)
<B>o</B> Can really do without the Developer.con search stuff. If I want to search, I will search CodeGuru, thank you.
<B>o</B> (Tired of *****in' here...)
Peace, and good luck!

... And now the Markup is not working...?
Geeze...

-
Re: Dude! This Seriously Sucks!!! (Was: Re: Add your comment...)
The markup does work.
You have to use square brackets instead of angled brackets.
As I've pointed out in the addendum to the original post I hope to continue to exert an influence on the quality of the content. Wish me luck in this regard.

There seem to be lots of broken links
Especially in the comments sections there are lots of broken links. Also this is the third time in a month that i have had to get another password, what's up with that?

Oh... Uh, yeah, yeah... I knew that... :)
(And you would think that I would have remembered that...! :)
The new site still bites! :)

The Content of the site is not really the problem, it is the current design, layout and L&F that is the big killer...! -And I know that I am going to have Kafka Dreams tonight about flying animated banners, and words like "EarthWeb" and "Developer.com" swooping down and attacking me...
Peace!

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
I know some of you may not care about the wavy margin, but I think it's worth looking into. If I didn't know codeguru.com,and I came to a page that looked like the current homepage...I would probably leave. Yes, that may be a stupid decision, but I don't have time to mess with something that isn't of a professional level. Codeguru now looks like a beginner's site.
Even though it's just look and feel, we don't want to alienate new developers that recoil at the homepage. I think that there will be fewer new posts than before, for that simple reason.
Please seriously consider the benefits that this choice has brought and whether they are really worth it.
Thanks,
Birch

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Zafir,
I am very disappointed. In your summary of comments, you COMPLETELY ignored the OTHER overriding theme in our comments: Serious concern that the quality of material on the new """code guru""" will remain as before. We have serious concerns because nothing we've seen from developer.com before has had any guts to it from a developer's standpoint. Lots of ads, little substance--at least for real developers. Obviously, there's a market for that. That's their bread and butter and I'm not comdemning them for their mode of business. But is this mode REALLY appropriate for codeguru???? Please address this for us.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
The new site is the pits - a triumph of presentation over content. It
has certainly dropped below the threshold of being useful given the
time I have to wait for the endless ads to download.
CodeGuru customisation of my Visa card - give me a break!
Does "Copyright ©1996-1999 EarthWeb Inc.. All rights reserved. Reproduction in whole or in part in any form or medium without express written permission of EarthWeb is prohibited" mean we have to ask EarthWeb to use any code snippets
we find useful ;-)
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
codeguru was a much better site -- I have always avoided developer.com because the site was slow and the search engine sucked... now I have to avoid codeguru.com as well!
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Just a few things:
A codeguru newsletter should go out asking if there is anyone not majorly concerned or who actually likes the new changes.
Why isn't "codeguru" listed in the "Earthweb" sites at the bottom of the fugly aqua wave?
Is it possible for EarthWeb to charge to access/download our FREE code?
Thanks Again,
Birch

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
This is very disturbing. By any standard, there has been an __AVALANCHE__ of highly negative response to the new codeguru. I can't recall seeing anything like this before! Does anyone there subscribe to the notion that n heads is greater than 1, where n is very large? And as important as all the criticism is this: Where the heck is __ANYONE__ from developer.com in all this trying to quench our fears and address our concerns???? I mean, even some standard marketing double speak is better than nothing. Just something. Anything! It isn't good. Sorta like an airline prepresentative after a crash finally coming out to address the families the following day. An exaggeration yes, but the psychology is the same. Bad omen for things to come. I'm not convinced that developer.com cares. This behaviour just confirms our fears about the future of codeguru. It helps solidify our belief that the concerns we've expressed are going to happen.
-
Search engine is better -- that's a start
I can now see recent additions to the site and the search engine seems to be hooked up. Much better.
The wavy line makes it hard to follow code listings.
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Hi Zafir,
I don't care about the wave, either. What I want is speed. I think the bottleneck is this ad which tries to run a Java applet on each page. Get rid of it. I don't like Java without any use. This means, I only like Java applets on a page if I have a benefit from it. Games for instance <g>.
BTW, I tried to rate a post a few hours ago. Didn't work.

Re: I HAVE A GOOD IDEA....
Maybe EarthWeb will fix all the problems we are complaining about.
Maybe this site will be even better than CodeGuru was.
I, for one, would be delighted.
But if the problems persist and the worldwide community of developers wants a
good site to support itself, then stop complaining and do something about it!
I am happy to coordinate any initial action. I can also provide
a server located in the USA.
If you are interested in helping setup and maintain a site for developers,
mail me: [email protected].
If enough of us are interested and each does a bit of the work, we
can do it!
If you're not interested, stop complaining and you'll get what you're
given by EarthWeb or whoever.

The "New" CodeGuru
I am very concerned about the direction of my favorite MFC/Windows programming site. Sold out to a group that couldn't make it on their own site. What's next, paid access? If CG is truly going down the tubes, then I will definitly be looking for another site. If developer.com wants to really keep CG as the most accessed developer site in the world, then put it back and leave it alone.
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Don't like the green wave. It obscures the view and adds little.
-
If you haven't got the message by now, you never will
It should be obvious by now, nobody gives a **** about your "new" look site.
It's like Netscape selling out to Microsoft!
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
What's worse than that putrid wavy "cyan wonder" and all the ads? That I can't get rid of them when I print an article. Why print it? Because it nauseates me to try to read it on the screen. There's way too much happening on a page now to possibly concentrate on what I'm reading. Talk about disregard for ergonomics and heuristics... YOWZA!
-
Easy thing to do! Make survey: "Do you like the new site?"
I think you should change the survey on the main page to "Do you like the new site?" with several responses like: YES it's great, Yes it's okay, no I hate it, etc.
Then you can quickly see how the changes have affected everyone.
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
The wavy left margin makes the pages difficult to read. It's very distracting!
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Pages seem to partially load. Always seem to have the advertisments come through. A good example of a design gone south.........
-
Just one question ..... Why ?
Why the switch ? .. was the site sold ? Its not that the action needs to be justified or anything ... just curios.
As far as the look and feel .. I dont like it, but i could get used to it except for one MAJOR problem .. if you goto the articles you will notice that the **** wavy left border interferes with the text making it difficult to read .. if you want to keep the wavy border, fine but atleast modify it so the text of the articles starts a little farther to the right.
Well, I guess all good things must come to an end.
Thanxs to all,
David Patrick

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
OK, search engine is "patched", but still (Find: Restore Window) when displayes docs where can it be find, don't work clearly (see first "choice"
Can't find error).
This left vertical wave is not heppy solution. Why, because if I find something interesting and I try to see it, then the (usefull) code over..., merged, how to say, my God, well the text of code is not visible because it's covered (XORed) with 'wave'.
I'll be happy when in right up corner exists buttons, for Home jumping, previous and next, but in fixed position.
Thanx.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
One thing more. Now if somebody replay me, I haven't message at my @ address that I have unread post in CG.
-
Re: look and feel of new CodeGuru
The old site was simple and effective, allowing the user to go in, read/get what they wanted and leave. The layout of this new site is appauling.
- The red links are really distracting and irritating to the eye
- The fixed width is pissing the hell out of me because it's too narrow so I have to scroll a lot more to read anything. I have a decent sized monitor and run at hi-res but the new site only uses up have of my screen width.
- The wavy border is driving me nuts, especially compounded with excessive scrolling, it's giving me sea-sickness.
Fair enough that you're more concerned with the quality of the content, but when the appearance of the content is such that it deters or hinders the users' ability to appreciate the content, then no amount of quality will make up for the decline in user hits to the site. Please make ammends.
-
Re: Why does this site even exist ?
No doubt Zafir and crew have done a good job, but is that the reason for it's sucess ? Me thinks not ! It's the articles stupid she/he said. And where do the majority of them come from ? Not from the crew folks. If we cannot collectively (must admit I hate collectives, but whats the alt. ?) come up with a replacement, then we perhaps we should stop *****ing.

Yet another developer.com crap site !
Rush out to sites like javacats.com or javalobby.org ! Developer.com sites stink ! Give us real info, not commercial crap !
