Darn, I did not consider the notorious partially eaton pi problem:(
I hope we can assume that Pi (3.14...) is bigger than e (2.72...). The first part is proving that for x > e we have x > ln(x) e:
x > e
x - e > 0
1 - e/x > 0 (we can divide by x since it's >0)
Now we integrate the function 1 - e/x on the interval [e, infinity[ and we get:
x - ln(x) e
Since its derivative is positive (meaning increasing function) and its value at e is 0, we have for x > e:
x - ln(x) e > 0
x > ln(x) e
Now we insert Pi into the function:
Pi > ln(Pi) e
ln(e) Pi > ln(Pi) e (since ln(e) = 1)
Taking the exponential of both sides (both are > 0), we get
e^Pi > Pi^e

Must have been because of this wasted step:Quote:

Yes. Those proofs are sufficient. This was an interesting problem I saw earlier today. The proof I took was very similar to Yves'.
- Kevin
The proofs are actually identical given the fundamental theorem
of calculus, however Yves proof contains a slight abuse of notation.
You find a particular antiderivative. Remember getting points off
if you forget the arbitrary constant. ;)
Yeah, well, I've never been a fan of calculus anyways ;)
Nah, it's not wasted, it makes things a bit clearer.Quote:

Question:
What three things do the following three words/phrases have in common?
1) Rendez-vous.
2) Intrigue
3) Escapade.

2. French

Awesome !;)
Only one of hometown's answers fell within the proper replies to "guess what I'm thinking".Quote:

how can Rendez-vous be a number plate?
Of course it can't. However, re-reading my post would be helpful. I didn't say number plate.Quote:

Tom, you are really a useful source of information...

Three men are standing in a line. One is God, one is the devil, and the other is the village idiot. You don't know which is which. God always tells the truth, the devil always lies, and the village idiot answers randomly. All three of them know who the others are. Asking three yes-or-no questions, determine who is who.
You must tell me how to solve this thing. Its bugging me to no end.
:DQuote:

Here's a hint:
possible arrangements:
G D I
G I D
D G I
D I G
I G D
I D G
If you could use your first question to find out where the idiot isn't, then on your second question you know you are getting a reliable (whether true or false but at least not random) answer. For example,
Asking the person on the left your first question,
Answer
G D I - Yes
G I D - No
D G I - Yes
D I G - No
I G D - ???
I D G - ???
If the answer was "yes," then you know the middle person is not the idiot, and you should ask him your second question. If the answer was "no," then the person on the right is not the idiot, and you should ask him your second question.
The trick is figuring out the first question, but I think this should help a little ;).
Another thing to add: considering the chart in my previous post:
G D I - Yes
G I D - No
D G I - Yes
D I G - No
I G D - ???
I D G - ???
But considering that D always lies, here is what the actual answer to the question you ask should be:
G D I - Yes
G I D - No
D G I - No
D I G - Yes
I G D - Doesn't matter
I D G - Doesn't matter
In other words, the answer to the question depends on the relative positions of the people.
Moderator, you rock ! :D:wave
I can't express how many of these figures I've written down. I've tried all the things that seemed similar to the traditional 2-person liar / truth where you use indirection, but I haven't had luck yet. But you've given me some more inspiration. I'll try harder...
Ok...
So you just ask the lefter if the midller is an idiot.
Go to the one indicated by the yes / no as SolarFlare hath provided.
You know they are all or nothing, truth or lies.
Ask them if they are the idiot.
God would say nay, the devil yes.
If god you can ask whether one you pick of the other two is an idiot. Similar with the devil. You know whether the answer is a lie or not. Either answer will clarify who is the idiot and who is the other not found (god or the devil).
Si?
But then...Quote:

G D I - No
G I D - Yes
D G I - Yes
D I G - No
I G D - ???
I D G - ???
If yes, the following combinations remain:
G I D - Yes
D G I - Yes
I G D - ???
I D G - ???
If no:
G D I - No
D I G - No
I G D - ???
I D G - ???
You have not conclusively shown where the idiot isn't with that question. :(
...
Your second and third questions work, though :thumb.
Eep!
That doesn't work and I was thrown into this spiral until...
???Is god next to the devil???
Then I thought of cyclic permutations.
??Is the arrangement a cyclic permutation of GDI??
Ask this one to the lefter.
You get these responses
Yes
No
Yes
No
??
??
as requested. Here the devil's lie works perfectly for maintaining the correct response for determining the midler.
Is this it, or did I goof again?
Yep that'll do it. You can sleep sound tonight ;). Or more simply, "Is the idiot to the right of the devil?"Quote:

Convenient that this question/answer takes up exactly a page (on 10 posts/page) ;).

Is this like Jeopardy where you give the answer and we have to give the question?Quote:

To the left person:
1. Is the idiot on other place than middle?
To the people in the middle or right known not to be the idiots from the first question, which was already posted:
2. Is god on other place than right?
3. Is devil on other place than left?
2 3
G D I N N
G I D N N
D G I Y N
D I G N N
Only the answers in the third possition are valide, so God is in middle and idiot is at his right.
Since it seems that I get to ask the next question, here it is:
What is the next string in the sequence:
1
11
21
1211
111221
312211
13112221
?
Classic !
13112221
1113213211
Guess that was too easy for a minded elf like yourself, especially if you've read "Ants"...
Assalaam o Alaikum,
Hello,
can't get the answer, could you explain?
Allah Hafiz,
bye
I have read "Ants", but I knew the answer from an even longer time. I'm actually reading another book from the same author at the moment. I didn't know that "Ants" got out of France. :thumb:
Signbit > Well, it's quite simple, you just have to read one line aloud to kind of get the next one:
1 is "one 1" -> 11
11 is "two 1" -> 21
21 is "one 2 and one 1" -> 1211
...
:)
Yes it did. So did the sequels, "Ants Revolution" and "The Day of Ants" (hope these are the titles in English). Also a great book is "The Thanathonautes" (Explorers of Death) and it's sequel "The Empire of Angels", while "Missing Link" is not so great as the others, but points out that the pigs have the closest DNA to humans. Well, I've read all the books of Bernard Webber (I mean those that got out of France and entered Romania :D ).Quote:

Hello,
humm... You are right cilu... nice advise :)

Assalaam o Alaikum,
Hello,
Oh Sorry Elrond Sir, but I hope that you'll find a very nice job soon...
It's you who should be asking the anohter questin cilu, 'coz you are the one who answere previous question...
Wish you all the best Mr. Elrond...
Allah Hafiz,
Bye,
Since I'll be in vacation for the next 2 weeks I'l try one that should leave no interpretations so you figure it out easy if the answer is right or wrong.
Use numbers 1,4,5,6 and arithmetic operators +,-,* and / to get 24. You can use the numbers only once (cannot have something like 4+4*5) and concatenation is not allowed (65-41 is invalid).
Same problem with 1,3,3 and 6 to get 17.
Solving one is enough. ;)
No answer so far... Is this so hard?
Assalaam o Alaikum,
Hello,
sorry to disappear like that, my univ. has started again actually...
will try to guess the answer... Hopefully in a couple of days, after that, you may post the answer (if no one else tries...)
Allah Hafiz (Bye)
