Where are we from ?

My post was early enough in the day ...

For the voting, I am not sure because a vote for the European constitution may depend on the country you live in rather than the country you come from. There are a certain number of election for which I can already vote in Ireland.

Well, I'll have to ask the ambassy. But they might send me something as well as I have already registered.

As for the job market in Ireland, I don't really know, but I think it is not too bad at the moment. Why ? Do you want to come in Ireland ? :eek:

The votres depending on where you live, europeanly speaking, is for your representing deputies. The ones that would seat at the European parliament. You can vote for the one of the region where you live (I think I did/could vote for the one in Sweden). Then maybe the country you live in let you vote for some local elections.

I've only been once in Ireland, I don't plan to go live there. But maybe some holidays, eventually I will.

I know. I did vote in Ireland for the last European election. But the case of the European constitution is slightly different, so I don't know if I'll be able to vote or not.

On the other hand, even if I am allowed, I may not go as it is a real pain to go to the French Ambassy ... :rolleyes:

Is that a figure of speech, or do you mean that's how you actually vote? In the US there was a controversy last election over not-up-to-date voting methods... fortunately there were other controversies to drown that one out though ;).

Well, we do vote by putting a paper in en enveloppe, and then the enveloppe in a transparent box, through a little door opened by the agent there.

I think during last vote there was some machine to vote :

But only in one city to test it.
We do not vote by raising a hand, or punching a paper, nor writing anything (well, in some exceptional cases, we can write something).

In France we usually still vote by puting a paper in an envelop. But there is one paper per option/candidate, so it is very straight forward and leaves no room for error. And usually, every one in France has the same system.

It's not like the US where every state can have its own system, some not being very intuitive, and some being error prone. Plus it makes it difficult to recount sometimes. It is kind of a big mess. I think like for something as important than the presidential election, the system should be much more simple, leaving no space for mistakes.

Guess what - it actually varies by county :) what a mess! Although I think it is incorrect to say that these are not intuitive, there are just a few people who don't take the time to actually read the ballot before voting.

Recounting is a mess as you say, because of the inconsistent systems.

The last time I voted, the machine I used was a little pushboard thing where you pressed buttons for candidates and little lights illuminated, then I pressed 'accept' or something like that to make it official, and it was electronically processed. Very convenient. The only problem with this method is that one of the companies that made these devices for use in Ohio promised to deliver the state to Bush in 2004... I think that is highly unethical and absurd, but it happened.

Wrong assumption.
Elections are also organized in most of dictatorships.

Just don't forget a little detail: on the paper there is a single name. :D
