Definitely! The problem with the government (and almost all governments) is that they're all talk and not actually doing anything. If they did something, problem solved, move on with life. But the problem is this: they are too concerned that if they do something, they will lose popularity. i.e.: if they vote to do something to microsoft (which I think they did, but havent implemented it yet, but thats beside the point), then all the people who didn't want it to happen (such as software companies, etc.) won't like it, and won't re-elect that person to the gov't. And that's all that matters to the gov't. Pretty messed up.

What haven't they implemented? The states I believe are going to file their own class action suits. But as far as I know the DOJ case is over with. And the DOJ doesn't care about politicians but one thing that was obsured was the notion of breaking them up into smaller companies ala baby bells.

Why is it that so many women assume an interest in football indicates low intelligence, even though they don't understand how the game works themselves? I realize there are a lot of beer-totin' slobs that love football, but that's only because there are a lot of beer-totin' slobs out there and football is the most popular U.S. sport. It's not the beer-totin' slobs that play the game. Football's an exciting, team-oriented, strategic sport and it takes a decent amount of intelligence to play it.

Many of the poster's on this thread have developed complicated software for things like physics simulation, drug pharmacokinetics, etc. These are interesting things, that I'm sure a lot of people want to sit down and explore with others. For example, me and some friends the other day were talking about Wachterhauser's theory that the origin of life was assisted by thioester's ability to act both in group transport phosphate energy channels and electron transport NADH type channels. That's the Origin Of Life. Really interesting stuff. Compared to... football?

My post was not about saying guys are stupid but an attempt at prodding an elevated level of conversation so I might be interested in joining this thread more. I understand the rules of football quite well, even american football. I just don't enjoy spending alot of time talking about it.

You speak as though European football (American soccer) and American football are the same thing. Anyone who thinks that the two sports have anything in common aside from 11 player teams is very mistaken. Interesting topics are a matter of opinion. That's totally extreme and crazy! What u mention seems to be more geared towards scientific programming, like FORTRAN and such on those mainframes and such. I was thinking that most Windows programmers like me wouldn't do such stuff. We write normal programs with normal GUI for mere mortals. This is crazy! :):)

Yes, humans have been interested in sports for quite some time. Particularly ball sports. There are some artistic displays of ball games in some Middle Eastern sites dating back 5 to 6 thousand years, and in the new world there are the well known mesoamerican depictions. There are no depictions I know that show women playing, but that is definitely something I would love to be contradicted on. Women more likely were gathering, as it is well known that until the Industrial Revolution, women spent a greater percentage of their time working on obtaining food and maintaining the dwelling than men, and provided according to most estimates, between 80 to 90 percent of the nutrition of humanity. Hunting, it is quite humorous to me, never really did help much, since there are many studies which show that usually the effort of hunting consumed more calories than were brought home. Which is why, it seems to me, women were never really into ball sports until very recently in our history. I'm glad you responded to my original post asking why men found football interesting. It definitely is something we can talk about more.

Oh, but please do not assume my ignorance and I will not assume yours. I was the one who made the clever little distinction between football and american football. And I claimed I knew the rules of both (plus I understand many other sports... I played volleyball in highschool and even played baseball as a kid).

Ah, so it's a "women are just more intelligent" kind of thing. Perhaps hunting was more useful in maintaining the fighting skill of the men at an adequate level to defend the women from wild animals or other men. Or are you saying that men served no purpose other than reproduction?

As for Gunter, that's a very interesting topic, but to many people, so is football. Maybe to you the origin of life is all we need concern our minds with, but others lead a more balanced lifestyle. It's a matter of personal choice. To claim a discussion of football is at some lower level of intelligence shows some extreme arrogance. Software engineers taking a short break from work to discuss football, in my lesser lifeform opinion, is quite healthy.

I am just one of those types that enjoys teasing and prodding those I am communicating with, but I never intend harm. I'm just playful.

And well, I am the type who assumes I CAN know anything if I put the time into it. This has served me well throughout my life. I basically figure that learning any field involves knowing two things: the objects the field talks about, and the transformations those objects have been described to undergo. This is the basis of the modified noun/modified verb semantics that all human languages support. I don't think its a bad thing to assume that I can know something.

But, lets get back to the fun. Does anyone here enjoy the satirist Robert Anton Wilson? In my life, I have enjoyed satire by Douglas Adams, Oscar Wilde, Kurt Vonnegut, and RAW. But I really hold the greates admiration for RAW. All of his works are CrAaZy!!

Perhaps his most famous work is The Illuminatus Trilogy (in collaboration with Robert Shea). Another popular work of his is Cosmic Trigger, but he has written some other very fine works like The Schroedinger's Cat Trilogy and Willhelm Reich in He**. He writes both fiction and essays. His fiction is really psychedelic/libertarian oriented and he borrows the cut-up technique of Brion Gyson/William Burroughs alot. He's a futurist in many respects, but in a creative way.

The best book I've read lately would have to be Black Lotus by Laura Joh Rowland. I had never heard of her before, but this is truly an outstanding book. It's part of a series, and not the first, but the book stands on its own. It's a murder mystery in 17th century Japan involving a corrupt branch of Buddhism. The "Black Lotus Temple" is really a cult trying to conquer Edo (ancient Tokyo), while the Shogun's Detective is trying to determine the cause of some strange happenings recently in town. I won't ruin the action for you! Definitely a book worth checking out, if you have time to read.

I've read The Illuminatus Trilogy. It definitely has a unique style, very clever and creative. Pretty wacky, though. It jumps all over the place. The "chapters" of the book are based on drug trips. Psychedelic/libertarian is a good description.

Look, if he would be from South or North America he could only be from Brazil. His English has contained mistakes before if I remember correctly, his French is terrible which excludes Canada and his Spanish has been corrected by a native Spanish so that excludes the rest of the America's, apart from Brazil where they speak Portugese.

In para-normal facts(extraordinary happenings), there was this boy who actually appeared outta nowhere sometime in the past, in the UK, I think.(around the 17th - 18th century)

Heck, belgium, the little dot next to the a bit bigger and the even smaller dot, doesn't even have that much french speaking people. ****, I've been in Kortrijk (or whatever u spell it) and they didn't even speak french there (atleast not the ppl I met)... That ain't necessarily so... When I was still a chat addy I rather talked to foreigners since they are more interesting. You can learn a lot from foreigners because of the different habbits they have and ways of doing things. Also the cultural differences are nice and you come to notice you shouldn't talk to some people in the same way you talk to them here. We dutchies are pretty direct usually and when anyone ****s up we usually aren't subtile about it. Other people might think we're offensive but usually we're just pointing out something, see it as possitive feedback. That you're (<- no one in particular) a ****head doesn't mean I like you less :-)

I only said his French was terrible: he spelled bonjour in two words. I did not say French is the only language in Canada, but it is a commonspread one in some parts as Quebec. I know most part of Canada speaks English. So I can conclude that this pretty much excludes Canada unless he's someone from the English speaking part who really didn't pay attention during French lessons, but that I consider very unlikely too.

Simon... you can't conclude anything. After all he might have immigrated, or like me, just plainly hates french. I had french lessons in school and I don't speak more than 2 words nowadays and I rather don't even say those and basing a whole theory like that on one word? ****, you ain't afraid are ya? He might have accidently hit space or whatever. Or perhaps he's just trying to mislead you.....

Is it actually wrong to use bon jour? They are 2 seperate words and they can be used as 1. Depends on context probably. Now stop about french, cuz I'm through my 2 words now :-)

Than read this post. I'm not basing myself on two words. And I orgiginally was planning to say something about the Dutch and French, but thought you wouldn't appreciate it. :D Maybe there is a core of truth in all those jokes, though I hope Belgians are not dumber than Dutch people. Anyway, it is ofcourse possible that he IS from Canada, but please, admit it, if your English and French isn't that great, the odds are against you that you still are from Canada, although there still is a (small) chance.
