You can indeed click all over the ad in order to remove it...it will be removed...nevertheless, you will also directed to the advertisers' site...in other words...click on the ad...not very handy in reducing the amount of clicks per ad... ;)

In addition....just realized that you said you had to remove it...nevertheless...I can click anywhere in the ad...and if I hit a clickable area the above can be seen (going to the advertisers' site). Thus, it kind of depends on the ad...

Well, how about if JupterMedia give 19"+ monitors to every member of CG with the money they are getting, so that they can stay up with there ads and no one get bothered. :mad:

I fully agree with Garham, in the past I did often click at those ads (yes, I'm the cause of all this :cry: ), but not anymore, I swear that I'll never buy whatever these vendors are selling, unless its the last thing on the plant earth and humanity can be destroyed without it. :thumbd: :sick: :mad: :thumbd: :sick: :thumbd:

I hope that someone will show this thread to JM marketing people... I'm wondering how do they interpret the reactions and if they learn something from it...

Just for the record, I have nothing against advertising when it's done with common sense... which is not the case here...

As per John analysis, there are 5,999 members have more than 25 posts, and we all know that alot of people come here and we have 146 members active much more than others in solving problems rather than posting questions, so what is the thing that keep us all here? There are many other boards, and no one gets any money here, but still its a remarkable figure that so many people help here, everyone has a busy life but despite that, they all come here.

Now think about the new comers point of view, why do they come here? To get some help, ok...if I refer someone to seek for the solution here, he comes here and feels that half of his efforts are being diverted by clicking again & again at the ads, and obvious distraction offcourse then great chances are that he may quit before hitting the right solution.

So, you see, people at both sides are being affected. I do understand that ads are what make CG running, but isn't it possible that you increase the rates, since CG is already getting alot of traffic, and put the ads at the front page only or whatever or give some option in the user control panel to enable/disable them (I know the answer, we all know that it won't be accepted by JM :mad: ) may be Deniz is right. Didn't JM has any soft corner for us?

In fact, I liked ads as they were before the change.They had a style and not that much space on screen.
It would be better to make ads 2 (3? more? :eek: ) screens in height if they preserve the old width.

This is now ridiculous. It forces the ad in the individual forum sections and even if you click on the thingy it will still reset itself if you use your back button from a thread page. The ad forces extra mouse clicks or worse massive amounts of down scrolling. Please give the manager that made this decision a book on web usability.

I really don't see a reason to come here anymore until management gets a clue.

It somehow often doesn't show me any ads, just white space with "Click Here to Expand Forum to Full Width" below (sometimes 1.5 screens from the top of the page)... If this thing is to grasp half a screen, it at least should have a purpose!

We may get used to it at some point, but the inconvience caused to regular users CANNOT be compromised, especially to the ones who help other people.

There are things that the Administration or whoever, have to note.


1. Take people who visit CG INFREQUENTLY, which is "THE BIG NUMBER"......,
They will come here because they are looking for something and this is a very likely place to find a solution..., search in google - good chance u'll end up here. So they will be here no matter what because, they need a solution desperately, so the ads won't bother 'em THAT MUCH..., if at all it does.


2. Take the reason why they are here....
"The Gurus" (who are few in number), choose to voluntarily reply to posts. Now THIS is something you HAVE to consider.
THEY are the backbone of CG.

You exist now this popular because of them.
You do not want to lose any of them because of some pesky ads. In the long run IT WILL hit back CG. Why????


3. If you have a problem, and if u really seach around a little, you will find the solution in code guru. OK, so what's new. Everyone knows it. So who cares if the Gurus stay or not, Right?????

WRONG!!!

If you lose just a few, of the few gurus u have, there will be lesser replies to some "unsolvable" problems that people come here for.
With new technologies creeping in every year, you need them to be here, because they are the gurus and they will learn quicker, and master it before most others come to know that something like that exists!!! So give them what they want.


If u lose some of them you WILL and SHOULD lose a H-E-L-L lot of people from (1) in the long run.


The ball is in your court like always.

One way to help with the massive scrolling problem is to place the "Click Here to Expand Forum to Full Width" link above the add where it will always remain in a fixed position.

I did check the AUP before posting that, and AFAIKFS I didn't "suggested a violation of the acceptable usage policy". Asking for a plugin or a tool that fixes the viewing of the forums in screen in no way afects the forum or the ads temselves. It is pretty much the same job a pop-up blocker, except that the plugin has to do the job after the page loads successfully. Please note I had posted the words:

...then the plugin clicks the expand link before the user has to...

In other words, let the page to load successfully (with ADs and everything) and then do something about it, before the user has to trouble himself with all that matter. It is not like cracking the forum software or catching the ad in real-time the same way popup-blocker do (as that wuld also be much more difficult to do).

If, please, someone can explain me why and where exactly I'm breaking protocol I would be glad, as given the AD problem, I consider my suggestion a nice, legal, just and fair way to go around.

EDIT: sorry for the incoveniences. And, coming up to the thread, I had already suggested the idea of letting the "Expand" text before the ad. I support this better that trying to resize windows or other means.

My guess is that i'ts the browser... IE, Opera and Konqueror have no trouble putting the ads where they are intended to be. At least nobody's complained, excepto for some instances in which the ad box overlaps with the forum area.

I think it's the browser also. It's not the 1st FF issue we've had. We had a whole toolbar and nav remotely hosted that was included in a page. When loaded directly it displayed fine, but when included FF alone showed it incorrectly. So much so that we had to ditch it entirely.

Sigh... let me just join the choir. This new ad placement is pure stupidity. Not only is it in my way when I'm browsing the forums, it also wastes an awful lot of screen real-estate (Something I have limited amounts of). It's just plain bad web-design. If you can't make it fit, just don't put it there.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that running this site is expensive, and therefore you need ads, that's not the problem. I have no problem with the other ads here and I even click them once in a while to support the site. The problem is that this particular ad, instead of tempting me to click it, is pissing me off. I'm sure that is not the intention of the advertiser.

I mean, do you really think this is fair to all of us using of our own free time to help to keeping CodeGuru alive? After all, if it wasn't for us regulars, this site would be useless. If we all went somewhere else, where would you be? I basically feel like you're slapping a big ad in our face as a thank you for making you money.

Oh, and just for the record: I'm talking to the people at the top who decided this ad was needed, not JPnyc and Brad. I know you guys are only "following orders", so to speak.

I am not against having large advertisement. However, the wide advertisement located on the right-hand-side creates a wide white gap which is not only wasteful but also displeasing to the eyes. Worst till, it causes the table which displays all threads to be inappropriately scaled. As a result, it is very difficult to read especially on smaller display. Probably I am a bit too fussy but I believe that the professionism of the people running the website can be seen from the layout of the webpage.

Even though, "Click Here to Expand Forum to Full Width" helps to ease some pains, I do hope that it is a temporary solution. This is because it doesn't solve the problem since it will be reverted whenever the page is reloaded. In addition, some people may regards this as an equivalent to pop-up advertisement. In other words, it can be easily assumed that most people just click to close the advertisement whenever it appears. Please correct me if I am wrong. Having such advertisement not only pisses people off but also it is not in the interest of the advertisement people. If I want to advertise something, I wouldn't want my advertisement to only appear momentarily.

In the case of the firefox issues -- I think it is a combination of the vBulletin software we are using and the browser itself. I've not seen an ad in text box entry form and I'm using Firefox as my primary browser for this forum.

But it wouldn't be the 1st "Firefox only" issue we've had. We had to dump a navbar and toolbar that displayed fine if accessed directly in FF, but if displayed in another page via SSI, the display was trashed. Didn't have any similar issue with IE or Opera.

not every time,only when the network was slow loading.... i refreshed the browser couple of times and it happened...

Oh. Well that'll make it tough to fix. So far I haven't been able to reproduce it.

I also find these ads extremely annoying, when I want to reply or read a topic, I don't want to read an add - if I wanted to read an add I would do a search on Google.
This is THE BEST programming forum in every sence of the word (the people: admin moderators, members) are all so very friendly and helpful.

I Found, this site/Forum really nice, as here we learn a lot, can express our views, and get the suggesstion for the problems.

But past some time, ads in the discussion forum are creating irritations.As when we move to a page/forum,we have to take one wxtra step to remove the adds.It will be better to find some alternative for the ads, but any how these ads should be removed from the forums.

Well... although the ads are an irritant, I just want Codeguru to remain healthy.

Everyone who uses this site knows it's one of the most important sites on the internet. I think it's THE most important site - the most professionally administered - the highest quality participants - with unequalled standards.

Hopefully, in time, the advertisers will want to change the ads. It's a reminder to me to click ads more often. Lesson learned :)

Perhaps something has changed but I have no problems using the forum on 1024*768.

Anyway, most people here come to CG to get advice and help that would cost them a lot otherwise. Some even advertise here ( just select a bunch of random sigs).

So why all the fuss about having ads, even if they are big? This means CG will have the money to go on and help more people for a longer time.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't think that anyone here don't want CG to get more money. Its about the irregular layout, sometimes the ads are small and some times they are wide, they disturb the layout randomly, furthermore, there are some members who have there ids something like [email protected], now when they'll participate, then the more then half of the right side will be bumped to the left side.

Now, this cause alot of irritation, that everytime you look, you find things at different places and at every refresh make another click and furthermore, you can't be sure that where this "Click hre to expand the forum" will be located next time :sick: while the page is loading.

I contribute to the Java forum in my spare time, because I enjoy trying to help. There are other sites I could contribute to instead, but until now I have much preferred the usability and friendliness of CodeGuru.

For me these intrusive ads have now tipped the balance away from CodeGuru, so unless I can find a way to block them, or they are replaced with something more sensible, I will go elsewhere.
