What are your settings at the bottom of te threads? Are you set to see all posts from the beginning, or just the last 30 days (or some other setting). You should check that.

Frankly, what's going on? Since the update the site is slow as ... (I have fiber connection). Pressing 'New post' shouldn't result in minute waits should it?
At least for searching, these two seem to be tightly related. I entered the Visual C++ thread where I found the combo box for viewing all posts from the beginning. I wondered if that might improve my search results when searching for stuff in old historical posts. And it does! I searched for items posted by me containing the word "dialog". But the search took 10-15 minutes. Previously, I'm sure this would have completed in under a minute.
Two major issues, noticed immediately after the update, still have not been resolved:
1. The site is slow as molassas. Replies to threads and new threads take 60 seconds or more, resulting in considerable frustration to all posters (especially to the more experienced posters who try to do many things simultaneously on the site), as well as the occassional double-post.
2. The search function still does not work. In a search just now for all of my posts that mention the word "socket", the search located just 7 items (even with the default setting of "any date and newer"). Google, on the other hand, finds more than 6600 with the search string of site:codeguru.com "mikeathon" "socket". 6600 is too high, but understandable since it includes both the "print" version of the post and the standard version. Obviously the 7 items found by Codeguru searching is ridiculously low.
Brad, when are these items going to be resolved? In looking over the instant thread, both of these issues were reported to you on June 20th, the very first day of the update. On July 3rd, in response to a follow-up post on the searching issue, you indicated that the "search indexes are being rebuilt". The slowness issue has been mentioned time and again, with no apparent progress.
It's nearly two months since the update, and the inability to address these issues becomes increasingly frustrating.
The alexa.com site reports that the page view percentage for Codeguru has dropped 10% mostly in the past two months, and that the traffic ranking has fallen from around 9,600 to around 13,000, also in the past two months. See screenshots below from http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/codeguru.com. I would be willing to bet that these drops are at least partly a result of issues related to the update. The alexa.com site also reports that the site's average loading time is a "very slow" 4.246 seconds (93% of sites are faster). A reasonable question to ask yourself is this: Is the new emphasis on advertisements (and presumably the pricing structure for them) justified in the face of these declining statistics?
Mike
PS: Similar results obtained with IE version 9.0, IE verison 8.0 and Firefox version 13.0.1
PPS: I apologize if the tone is perceived as unduly harsh. Perhaps it would have been better to be more diplomatic.
It's 4:30 on Thursday afternoon. The last post in the Visual C++ forum was over 9 hours ago. Participation seems way down to me. I've seen that happen to a couple of other sites where an upgrade didn't go well. People leave and they don't come back.
MikeAThon's post with the alexa.com results made me curious as to whether there have been fewer new members per day/week/whatever since the update. So I tried to see the members list to knock up a quick graph. The first problem I encountered was that I couldn't find a link to it anywhere. But after I remembered the url I typed http://forums.codeguru.com/memberlist.php in manually, only to be told "Sorry! The administrator has disabled the list of members.". Is there any reason for this to be disabled?
As to the search problem - could we at least have a bit of honesty as to when/if this will ever be solved? It really shouldn't take this long to fix, which makes me think something really bad has gone wrong. The lack of communication on this is getting more annoying than the original problem...
When the update was made, and these problems showed up, I thought I would just wait a few days before coming back to these forums, as I enjoy helping out. But I have been waiting two months now, and am starting to think they will never be fixed :(
We are having these issues on two of our forums, so I don't alway sremember what I said on one and not the other. Let me summarize some a few things:
There are a few issues we have not fixed. We've pulled in the vBulletin people to help as we believe the software is causing the issues. This is specifically true of the speed.
So - we are still working on the speed.
Membership list was disabled by us. It was one of the things we looked at to see about increasing the spped. We'll see if we can get it back after we get the overall speed issues resolved.
Search should be working. I'll test it as soon as I'm done with this post.
Finally - Alexa #s have always been off for our sites.
Brad!
Over 26 hours since anybody posted anything in the non-Visual C++ forum. Last one out turn off the lights.
Also, I'm getting a lot of message boxes asking if I'm sure I want to leave the page when I click a Firefox bookmark to go somewhere else. That's really annoying.
well I registered in july but I didn't see the old codeguru
There is already so much ... however i feel i need to add this one too..
On occasion (and has happened to me about 4 times in the last few months) when submitting a post or an edit (Self or mod edit) i get a SQL error page with the following detail
and this is very often around the time that there's terrible lag on the site... So I think it could be related...Code:Database error in vBulletin 4.1.5:

Once again trying to get to this topic...

I've seen that page quite frequently too. It seems to crash the forum and I usually can't get back onto CG for maybe 3 or 4 minutes.
I clear out my CG cookies after that message and then sign back in. Seems to work right away.
Yes, it helps, however only for some days (sometimes a week), and then all the problems come back. And I do NOT want to remove my cookies/history every week because all my saved logins go away!
Note that I didn't have such a problem with the previous CG versions at all.
I don't think cookies has anything to do with it. I don't clear cookies, but the message just comes and goes when it feels like it. I'll get it a few times, then 5 minutes later it's gone away.
The last hours or so CG have behaved like before the update so some major issue might have been fixed (holding my thumbs). :)
I had thought the same until about forty minutes ago being in the "quick reply" mode I got the "... want to leave this page" dialog and after pressing "leave this page" button got moved to the "normal reply with quoutes" mode with already published message and a popup dialog telling me that I cannot post my message until .... seconds! :thumbd:
And I got the "database problem" messages the whole day yesterday and also once or two times today.
Some processes were ended as of last night. Let's see how performance is for the next day or two. Let's see if it is any better at all.....
Brad!
I have no idea what "Some processes were ended as of last night" means but the most of the problems still persists:
- Some minutes ago I got again the popup about "Leave this page" and after confirm to leave could saw my post being duplicated.
- Then while trying to post in this thread I had to wait about 40..50 seconds and then got the message about connection problem with this site... (well, after Refresh it began to work again)
ugh.
I'll make sure everyone internally knows that the issues continue and that we need to continue to search for solutions.
Brad!
I agree that the problems don't seem to be getting any better. I suffered another crash today when I tried to post a new thread on the Visual C++ forum and (once again) it was several minutes before I could access CodeGuru again.
This really sucks Brad. CodeGuru is so unreliable now as to be near unusable. We've all been patient but the problems have been going on for far too long. :(
Addendum...
I've just made 3 attempts to edit my previous post (above) but each attempt failed.
I just wanted to add that the only obvious improvement is that we can now find old (i.e. historical) posts when searching. Nothing else has gotten even remotely better AFAICT.
I've only used CG a couple of times in the past 5 days but despite my problems 6 days ago, the past 5 days do seem to have been better.
I pushed hard again this past week on teh developers and techies. I'm going to keep pushing until we get things a lot more aceptable. On VBForums, theings are running smoother today. Hopefully we see the same here.
Brad!
Folks how to I view members? In the old forum, there was a page where you could view members name and sort by date joined, total posts, etc.
What's the equivalent in the new forum?
Arjay -
The member list is currently disabled. As a Mod, you have other options, but the public member list is currently disabled until we resolve all of the speed issues.
Brad!
Update: We've added more servers, so let's see if that helps performance and such.
If you can fix the software, throw more hardware at it. Isn't that what they say? ;) :)
Brad!
Such as what? Advanced search for posts from "Igor Vartanov" still finds my posts not earlier than June 21st. I don't think the extra servers could help with this. I believe my message history has become lost for ever. This is not funny anymore. I cannot express the degree of my disappointment. Now really, does anybody care how many times this was reported since June 21st? It's October coming, come on guys...
Igor - I can't remember exactly what's needed but there's a way to make each forum search earlier than June 21st. However, searching is still pretty slow, even with the new servers. The rest of the site isn't too bad though. I think that searching back to the earliest available date should be the norm (like it used to be). Very few users would actually want to exclude those early posts from their searches IMHO.
Just noticed a glitch in the private message preview (using IE8):

Speed feels ok now, and I didn't hit any database errors recently. :thumb:
Has the forum search been fixed?
The forum was very slow again about ten minutes ago and I got a DB error as well. Now the speed seems to be normal again.
Woops .. the DB Errors are back....
Attached Screen shot, also the Full Error text...

Yes, I get somethimes such an error too!. For example, yesterday I had it twice.
It seems that today the forum is slow again around the same time as yesterday.
I'm emailing management yet again.
Seems like the forums have been running a bit slow as of late. Fully loading pages seems to take about 3 seconds (Alexa claims average time is 5 seconds (link)), most of which seems to be in the forumdisplay.php loading.
Chrome dev tools say about half the time is spent waiting for the server and the other half transferring the data. Anything we can do to speed this up?
On the server side, you might be able to decrease the wait-time for those scripts by cacheing a version of the page and serving the cached version if it was generated XX seconds ago. On the transfer side, can you configure the HTTP server to send compressed data (perhaps it already does this) to reduce data transfer time?
Here is the design pattern for the cacheing idea: http://www.theukwebdesigncompany.com...hp-caching.php
I was going to complain again about the word-wrap issue (no word-wrap any more when typing) but hurrah! It seems to be fixed this morning. I'm sure it was still faulty when I last used the site (quite recently) so at least some progress is being made!
I do NOT see any progress at all! :thumbd:
"word-wrap" does NOT work.
A lot of other "small bugs" have not been fixed either.
Instead I see kinda regress. I've got again this strange message:
Just because forum engine decided to publish my post twice! :mad:Quote:
The following errors occurred with your submission
This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts. Please try again in 15 seconds.
That's very strange Victor. It's working for me (with Windows 7 / IE 9). It only began working very recently though (in fact, only today).
Overall though, the site is still pretty slow with frequent "Database Error" messages.
I wonder if the word wrap issue is browser related?
Maybe. At least I never encountered that problem with IE 8 on XP Pro SP3.
The only wrapping problem I see (and already mentioned) is that the code blocks, unlike the earlier forum software version, now do (not word-aware) wrapping instead of horizontal scrolling. I think that's completely unrelated, though.
What about the forum search?
John, I use Google Chrome.
Some kind of "Database Error" or very similar problems happen sometimes but only afternoons (about noon GMT)
Hmmm... I tend to notice it in the afternoons too (UK time) although I never attached any significance to that.
Eri523 - If you mean that it isn't finding old posts, AFAIK the forum search never stopped working. After the upgrade it's preset to only go back a few months but you can change that in your preferences somehow (I've already done it myself but I can't remember what was needed).
