Actually, they came from St-Malo... how original, but the guy, good old Jean Hélie was (supposedly, I didn't check) from Brittanny. He got the surname Breton when he came to Canada because I guess he claimed to be from there. So I was telling the truth, from a certain point of view, as Obi-Wan Kenobi says :)Quote:

Actually, that's from my father's side. On my mother's side, the first ancestor came from Ile-de-Ré near La Rochelle around the same date. He was a descendant of Thibault de Champagne and thus my family quote is "Passe avant le meilleur" or roughly translated: "Advance before the best".

wow! I'm impressed you know so much about where you come from. I'm interested in genealogy since lately. But I don't know much about my family. They are all dead... ;)
I mean I know which part of France they were, but from how long?? no idea.
Saint Malo is a great city! Beautiful, and rythmed by the tides.
La Rochelle is nice too, actually they both have walls of the same kind (I would say Vauban style).

It is more like: "where are we from around now" than "where are we from around a couple of centuries ago". :D Even the first is volatile: Sonu moved from India to Germany, Yves from Luxembourgh to Spain, Marina from France to Sweden and back (if I am correct) and me from my office to the coffee machine and back. :D

Old Quebec City is supposed to look like Saint-Malo. The houses all share one wall and are made out of cut stones. But how would I know, I've never been there!
That's one of my goals in life. Travel.
Unfortunatly, as of right now, I've only been around Canada and the USA.

Yeah, I guess our generation is travelling more around the world making it difficult to define really "where you're from"!
I, myself, am still closely related to my roots, but that's becoming less and less the case. My girlfriend is from Vancouver and our kids (if kids there will) will have a hard time answering this question themselves!

Don't worry, I didn't do this research myself. My cousin is a genealogy freak and I just got the info from her. The crest is kind of a running gag in the family... I mean let's face it, we're not exactly aspiring to the throne of France! :D heheQuote:

The reason why nealy every Quebecer knows its origins is because the clergy kept amazingly relevant records of our ancestors, but you'll also find that the Quebecer's genealogy usually stop at around 1600's... ;)
It would take a long time to go back 1600 years in the past!
Yes that's right, the Frontenac(?) castle looks a bit like saint Malo... And you could compare the alleys around the city, like the ones on the walls of Saint Malo. But I don't remember enough of Quebec city to tell. But I go to saint Malo almost once a week!! :)
