Where are we from ?

Hi all,

Do you think "mind" is only for mankind, or do you think one day computers will have one too ?
I mean, do you think mind is connected to one body or not ?
If not...well i don't know. It yes, and that's what i think, so maybe one day there will have new intelligences.
I think mind is the result of a very very complicated thing. For humans, it's the brain. For computer, is the CPU. So maybe one day, CPU will become very very complicated and then computers will begin to have a mind.
Why all this in this discuss board ?
Because maybe, we are creating a new intelligency...
Ahah, that's crazy.
Maybe dangereous.

No ...not really. I wanted to know whether it's Turkey or Chicken but I guess I guess I have seen Chicken Chops too much and whenever I want to drop Chicken it now comes with a surname ...Chops :cool:

I have been thinking for a while and am still thinking Platinum Plus IS Xeon, with that difference he leaves the things about gurls away in order not to raise suspicion. But that is just an impression.

Haven't you noticed? CPU's are already very complicated and your operating system does have it's own mind. :D

I think CPU are not so much complicated. We think they are complicated because we have spent a lot of time and research to create them..but in fact, have you ever seen a computer which is enable to write a simple story of four lines ? no! And a child can do it.
I think human brain is much much more complicated, and we will have to wait a long time to have some CPU which could do the same things as we can do.
And this is my question...if mind is due to one complicated processus..then computer will have one..one day.
How interresting, no ?

Oh my god, here we go again with philosophy ;)

I think that there will be computers in the future that will think that they have a mind and will be able to reflect upon themselves. This does not mean that from our point of view they have a soul or are an entity though.

But I don't think there will be computers that are like humans. There is not much point in developing such a thing (even though many people strive to achieve it, I have to agree) and it's inherently difficult. For example, Data from Star Trek is a very bad design. Why pack everything into a humanoid form when you could probably do it more efficiently in some other form.

With the current research in AI, we are really far from this vision though. Computers will get more and more "intelligent", but the applications will continue to be in limited areas.

On the other hand, we're not far from getting computers to pass the Turing test regularly. The Turing test is "the" test to see whether we can qualify a machine as "thinking" or not. The basic idea is that a human and a computer are given the same chance of passing this test. A human evaluator sits at a terminal that is either connected to a computer or a another terminal with a human. At the end of the session, the evaluator has to say whether he was talking to a machine or a human. A computer passes the test if the evaluator came to the conclusion that he was talking to a human.

BUT, this is rather an exercise in making the program trick the human evaluator AND is a not really a measure of the intelligence of the program. If you have heard of a program called Eliza then you will know what I mean.

That's interresting.
So you think there is only humans who can have a soul ? why not. but also why only ?
Human are very stranges. We always want to be at the top. We cannot think of something which could be superior. It's like scientist who say that life is impossible on planets whithout Azot, oxygen...that's a bit ridiculous...no ? All we do has to go with the rules we have created...

Be carreful. I'm talking about mind or soul...not intelligence.

What I mean is that from our point of view they may never have a soul. This does not mean though that they will not think that they have a soul. This is perfectly valid though, since we humans are the only ones who "confirm" that we have a soul.

Nobody else than humans have confirmed that we have a soul, since we are aware of only ourselves as intelligent beings. Some think that animals have a soul, some don't, Some think plants have a soul, some people don't, but the only reference we have is us, humans.

If a computer could self-reflect and think that it had a "soul", it would maybe even think that humans didn't have one.

It depends, in english canada, it is exactly the same as in the USA. So yeah... turkey.

In Quebec, it is simply not celebrated.

Didn't see any of that in history lessons. First time I here about that one. :confused: When did this happen and why?

Remember that at the beginning there were no USA or Canada. All were French or English colonies, and all people there were pilgrims.

These nations were only created later, probably after Thanks Giving was created.
