Re: New terms and conditions
Zafir-
You have undoubtedly gotten more crap about this whole transisition than you deserve. I think this agreement is more than fair, and precise in its terms. Nitpicking about the term 'collection' is about as laughable as discussing what the definition of the word is is. Wake up people- the code is YOURS, the web site is THERE'S. Get over it... and SHOW THE CODE !!!

Re: why the long delays?
turn off the graphics, or use a better web browser, like Opera

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
The site is now about about ten times slower than it was (no exageration). I don't have the patience for this slow, pretty, frilly thing. If this keeps up it will lose its attraction for me. I will move on to a no nonsense programmers site. This is such a perfect example of how commercialization can ruin the web.

BOYCOTT Developer.com and EarthWeb.
Until CodeGuru is returned to its former greatness, boycott Developer.com and EarthWeb.com. Remove yourself from all mail list from these sites and make sure you tell them why. CodeGuru was ours, not Zafirs. We all want it back.
-
Losing Comments
Currently, comments get lost occasionally (e.g. about Syntax Highlighting Editor), which leads to same errors being debugged by several people (which means reinventing wheels ...). I would have posted this at the proper forum, but my former account got lost at EarthWeb and there currently is no way to get a new one! By the way: Login handling without cookies or scripts would be a great enhancement of the site! I have deactivated scripts and I can see no difference, so they are only a risk (not worth taking!).

Surf without ads!
Dear developers
I've found a simple utility which filters web pages from ads, animated gifs, popup windows and other unwanted stuff. It works as a HTTP proxy, has lots of configuration options, and it's free.
I've tested it on CodeGuru - work's great! Pages are loading a little bit faster, and at least I don't get this annoying speeding cars or voting banners. Here's link:

Enjoy,

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
It could be the server itself or the internet traffic or both. Right now I tend to suspect that it was due to internet traffic since at the moment the speed of these discussions is quite good. Anyway, I've already raised the issue of speed and I am sure the systems guys will look into this.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru - SLOOOOWWWWW
ohmygod - it's slow. This General Discussion being a good(bad) example.
Wavy line gets in the way of the left side of the non-navigation bar text.
Over use of tables makes nothing render until whole page is downloaded. Pages are huge, fat, bloaty pages. Justr look at the HTML of this page and see all the bandwidth killing alt="*" crap in the pages - robots only doin' as they were told. Even the stylesheet is bloaty for christs sake - no wonder the site runs like fat three legged dog on valium dragging an anchor!
Goodbye CodeGuru, it was good while it lasted. Yet more proof that commercial reality is a little too much reality for good web sites to take. Maybe my site shoudl get woken up agin<bg>.

Many thanks and a question
Many thanks for creating this marvellous resource. I have learned a lot and continue to learn. I hope the folks at Earthweb keep it up.
Where do I send a comment about a broken link? E.g. http://www.codeguru.com/mfc/comments/886.shtml
has a link to Re: that leads to error 404.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
First of all, i like codeguru... but
The page loading time has increased 300%, maybe because of the banners above the articles.
Word wrapping seems to be a very big problem, and should hopefuly big fixed soon, its hard to read the articles. Also why is codeguru look like **** on my 1600x1280 desktop.... maybe because it's build with Frontpage? like in 800x600 hard formated pages???

Re: Surf without ads! (Double Edged Sword)
I think there are more ads because nobody uses them. Alot of
sites including the old guru, use ads to support the bandwidth.
By killing all the ads you force sites to look for other ways
to get support.

Could this be the cause of the login problems
Something that i noticed today is that when you go in to edit your profile it changes your password. Even if you set it to the correct password, press submit, then click edit profile again the password will be set to something
else. Could this be the cause of login failers?

Re: Ok, the site was sold, why not keep the old layout for the time being?
Exactly!
The site should have remained on the old server until the new one was up and running. Most people expect things to work 100% and don't expect to be beta testers for something new. A link on the old site to the new one should have been shown which also told people that they could beta test the new site. Once all of the bugs were out, then the servers could be swapped, and with everything tested (by those who wanted to test), there would have been few problems.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Get rid of the $@#R%#$ blue wave.

Zafir is it true?
Hello Zafir,
Is it really true that you did not even inform the section managers before selling the codeguru site?
Frank.
-
New Look
The wave thing on the left part (which is the background image) makes me ill when reading articles.
Please get rid of it.
I think I will never come again if it is still there in 2 weeks.

Re: What did Zafir have to sell? -- A Great idea!
That's a great idea! If Earthweb does not own any of the old codeguru code and discussion-- as they've asserted-- then someone should just take all of it and put it on their own *fast* site so we can all access it over there! Wouldn't that test Earthweb's claim? Anyone have that much space on a server?
-
Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
I hate to say it, but I like the old format better. There is something about the format of developer.com that I have always found annoying, and thus never used the site. It hurts the eyes. I hope Codeguru can be customized to get its individuality and functionality back.
Bryan.

Yes, but ...
Hi,
I'm Ravi Bhavnani and was the section manager for the MFC/C++ and Shell sections of CodeGuru. I also helped maintain the site's integrity and helped redesign the layout of the section indices.
It's true that not all section managers were informed (or knew anything about) the sale of CodeGuru to EarthWeb prior to its execution. Though I would have appreciated some sort of notification, I can't take this personally. Almost all acquisitions are bound by stringent legal requirements that state that the terms of the acquisition not be disclosed to any parties prior to the event. Zafir has been gracious enough to admit that the transition could have gone smoother. I respect that.
All I want is for CodeGuru to continue to be the single most useful collection of Windows/MFC programming tips. I'm sure many others feel the same way. I hope that after the technical and administrative issues are worked out, CodeGuru will return to this state.

Correction to: Yes, but ...
In my previous reply, I stated that not all section managers were informed about CodeGuru's sale to EarthWeb. I believe this is wrong. As I understand it, *no* section managers were informed. I apologize for the error.

God this sucks!!! 45 seconds to download a page!
This is just horrible. Change it back or someone start a new site. Plus, no one is reviewing my coide submission!

Re: Surf without ads! (Double Edged Sword)
How about a LOW fee developer's website? I would be willing to pay a few bucks a month for access to a good, fast, quality ad free site.
-
Re: Yes, but ...
Hello Ravi,
Does your reply implies that Zafir is the only "party" to the codeguru site?
It is just interesting to know that what used to be work of many is the actually the personal asset of Zafir. I personally did not know this too, thanks for the information.
Well, we do not have codeguru again, it is developer.com--I hope you will take note of this.
Regards,
Frank.
-
Re: Yes, but ...
Frank,
I don't know any details about the sale of CodeGuru to EarthWeb. I believe Zafir was the only person (other than EarthWeb, of course) who was involved, but he's the best person to answer that.

Windows cut at the right
Hello,
I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this message but I hope not to bother anybody.
The new page design it consumes an important space on the left of the screen for data of the Web. When the samples code are visualized, some cannot be read complete and you should constantly move the screen to read the complete sentences.
This gets more complicated when you want to print the page, because the sentences are cut by the right and they are not printed complete.
Is there some solution to read the texts in the complete screen and that they are not cut in the printer?.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Surf without ads! (Double Edged Sword)
boy, the ad execs, and other consumeristic peoples have brainwashed you.
Ads ADD to the bandwidth, of which there would be less wasted if there weren't so many frickin' ads !!!I have NEVER gone out, and bought ANYTHING because I saw it in an advert. In fact, I tend to avoid stuff in ads.

Whomever created the new "codejock", etc., please post the URL here
I take it that the falloff in postings in this Q&A forum is the sign that the site is just about dead as far as previous users go. I'm getting concerned that I've missed someone posting the new URL for the replacement "codejock", or whatever. Frankly, this site is now SO SLOW that I can't waste the time searching every posting for the URL (or anything else!) in case the author forgot to specify a new title in the posting.
Could someone please post the URL here so I can delete this bookmark? Thanks!
-
Re: Whomever created the new "codejock", etc., please post the URL here
CodeJock is not a replacement for CodeGuru. It's an excellent collection of UI classes created by Kirk Stowell. CodeJock can be found at http://codejock.com.

Re: Add your...Sucks now.
Sucks. This single page is alomst 200k, biggest example of www bloatware I have seen in a long time. Lots of ads are not a problem but at least shrink this page down. Someone please take a look at the HTML generated by this machine and ask yerself what all the alt="*" are for? Anyone using Lynx here? Anyone? Thought not.
Still, now that Zafir is 12 super-big ones better of I guess his HTML hacking days are over -mine would be hehe.
Happy hunning Zafir...

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
Fonts are too big. List of articles in each sub categary is hard to read because what should have fit in one line is not broken into two. I have to scroll too much for what really is a short list. Please, this is a site for developers, should set a good example of good user interface.

What a horrible mistake
This is a perfect example of people taking something great and making something sucky out of it. Bring back the old code-guru or all your advertisers will realize that no one visits this site anymore.

Re: What a horrible mistake
I agree... I hate this place now and don't plan on returning. This sucks!

A few things...
1. Are submissions of new code being handled? The latest addition is still listed on 1/9. Could submissions sent since the sale of CodeGuru have been lost in cyberspace? I personally don't care who owns the site as long as it works like it has, and Zafir and Mark Schlack have repeatedly said that things will be fixed. But we are closing in on a point in time where things have to start shaping up before people will lose interest. The site is admittedly still a great resource because of all the code that's already here, but if nothing new gets added, people *will* eventually move somewhere else. If no changes are visible in say the next couple of weeks, I think that serious permanent damage will have been done. (Although I'm sure many people will say that the damage already has been done).
2. The site is slow. I'm not sure if anything has been done to make it faster, but it's still slow. However, don't judge the speed of the site only on this page. I'm not sure about this, but I would guess that it's auto-generated each time someone loads it, and since this is one LONG thread (354 replies last time I looked), it's bound to take some time to build it. But the fact remains, the rest of the site is also too slow.
3. This has been said by a lot of other people, but I'll repeat it anyway: GET RID OF THAT WAVY GREEN BORDER!

Pity for millionaire Zafir? Is a shareholder of EarthWeb speaking?
You say it. We need to have pity for millionaire Zafir. SHOW THE CODE. - Are you shareholder of EarthWeb?

No new content for the last 2 weeks
Zafir,
If there isn't some new content, it won't matter how much time you spend on the site.....people will wander off in boredom.......

waaa waaa Re: What a horrible mistake
<said with big tears coming down your face and trembling lip> bbbbbb bbbbbbb baaaaa waaa haaaaa I'm tttttaking my code and I I I I'm ggg gg ggg going home.
I tell ya some of you "programmers" are really showing your true colors here. This should be a question on an application for a job
A large repository of code available on the web is bought up by a larger company. You then ...
A. Look for any reason how this could effect you in any way negatively and cry like a little baby and refuse to use that code and increase your project times because you have to write everything or at least figure everything out by yourself.
B. Look at what the major majority is doing and join them
C. Realize that as long as the code is still there and accessable its still a valuable resource and continue to use it.

Wave, speed, copyright, and the rest ...
You do not listen to the voices in this newsgroup or you are not allowed to!
People are just disappointed (wave, speed, ...) and afraid of looking to the copyrighted source code.
You should maybe state on the home page that: "Learn from the source
code on this site and do not afraid to use it in your own source
code."
Maybe make two sections, one with free code and other one with heavily
loaded $'s.
Thanks!

Brainbuzz.com
I found a site everyone can start posting too...there is not a lot of info on there currently, but they have a great interface, maybe we can all go there now.

Thank you very much!

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
I have a suggestion.
There should be a separate forum of web development because I don't see a forum where I can put questions related to HTML, DHTML, ASP, Javascript etc. I have to put questions in Developer forum or General forum.

Re: Add your comment about the new look and feel of CodeGuru
amitg,
You should post that suggestion in the "New Board Ideas" forum. You revived a long-lost post anyway.
