I first started programming about 20 years ago on a TI 99-4a in Basic. Loved computers but I let a pimply faced 3 braincelled male chase me out of the local computer lab because I was female. I've gotten past that and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let anyone one harrass me out of something I love doing because I have boobs.
So to answer your question..I've studied Visual Basic, Java (hope to have my Sun Certs within a year) and am currently thoroughly enjoying spending my summer eyeballs deep in C++. I'm into not doing database work mostly, but I can if I have to. I've been out of the loop for a long time, and would like to get back into all thing tech.

If you learn C++, try and forget everything you learned before in VB. Java is not too bad a starting point, if you are ready to accept that you will have to manage memory on your own. Classes and OO programming are the same concepts though in both languages. C++ adds a bit more complexity with different types of inheritance, but that's not so hard.
