Hi, xp ain't no update. It's a whole different animal altogether, and it sucks. If you want control. You'll hate it. The more you know about computers, the more you'll find bad about it. It's really ie and mediaplayer with a gui. xp crosses every line ever drawn. If you want m$ to tell you what to do, and boss you around, take away your power, force you to use only m$ apps, and watch what you do by sending info to m$ while you use your computer, then hop on the bandwagon and let them take away your freedom. Read the nitty gritty details and you'll see. I have heard from user after user about the crap m$ is pulling with this. They went right ahead and did all the things they went to court about. That and much more. Now mediaplayer is integrated as well, which is already crippling other CD player apps, according to users. Just wait 'til the first few updates occur and they REALLY get in your face! NOT ME!!
LOL! :-D
I'm using WinXP on another machine, and it is not "updated win98 with bug fixes"! Instead, it is "updated win2000 with more bugs" !! ;-)

To understand what WinXP is you should imagine your grandmother with makeup and think of her in a sexual way! they only upgraded 3 things: the interface (stuff like round windows, 16Mln colors icons etc.), media player and stuff AND THE WHOLE NEW FAMOUS M$ BLUE SCREEN!!! (now with many lines of text instead of the "Warning!"). Oh, and ofcourse the home-bugs edition and the office-bugs edition! This is what I think of WinXP and programming: XP (read as "smily")

I have been using VB6 on Windows xp for about three weeks and I have not run into any problems yet.
No I haven't tried VB in XP but I do have XP Pro installed on one of my partitions as I use BootMagic.
I think it is alright. But I hate the new UI look. However I did control just about everything. Turned off all the animations and fading/shadowing effects. Switched everything to classic setup. Now it looks more like Windows 2000. Of course there are something things that are annoying that you have to hack the registry.
also avialable windows 98 so Why You using Xp

What a load of cods. Why don't you offer something of more constructive use. At least XP is of some use whereas your childish proferings are just that.
I guess what's a turd to one is fertilizer to antoher...

I found some really annoying bugs on winxp that just makes it use a nightmare. i wanted to scan some pages with a scanner, after EACH page is halted (blue screen)! the TV card also halts the system form time to time (ofcourse i have the newest "XP" drivers for all of my hardware). one of the most annoying bugs is in media player, when the visualizations are shown on full screen, it goes way too slowly (frame by frame) but when i enter some menu it shows fine. the same problem i've seen in other programs too. my hardware is fine and i have no hardware compatibility problems.
Does anyone know what should i do in order to fix at least some of these bugs? I've already insatlled the windows updates).
Thanx.

Windows XP is very different from what we had. Some programs don't work anymore, but instead we do have bugfixes.... Because they remove standard support for old software. VB6 and windows xp runs smooth on my pc :)
The only thing you don't have to do is running some kinda pc emulator on windows XP... This makes windows 90% slower.
Windows XP looks better, and has less problems then windows 2000 (at least less noticable :P)
So, first take a very firm look at windows XP before saying it is crap. WE ALL USE WINDOWS ! And why ? because linux is too hard to learn, and full of beta stuff like: version 0.88
I stick with windows !
Windows is crap. I use it 'cause I need it (the proggies I am acustomed to work with run under DOS/Windows), but... Well, what about a self-destroying operating system? Windows connected to the intentet means a hard-drive formatting and stuff reinstall at least once a year.
I have been using WinXP Pro for 6 - 7 months now and haven't had any problems. Why would you go with 98 it has no security features. WinXP has all the drivers that i need and you don't have to use Windows Meadia Player I use Music match Jukebox 7.1 and it works perfectly.
Do VB6 programs (not teh actual VB6 program) work on XP or are there any problems?
The above talk reminds me of my self when WIn3.1 replaced DOS. I always used to recommend DOS over WIn3.1 because Win3.1 was slow, buggy and heck it didn't even have a way of partitioning drives (that I knew of). Eventually I started using WIn3.1 since no one could use or view your work without it.
Win95 was cool
Win98 SE was the best so far
Win NT--> 4 = Crap
WinXP = SpyWare trashy .comware
win200 = good
I can say to anyone that WIn98 aside a few new cool DLL's like the image dll of XP has a way better and more stable system.....imagine XP :) I say this because I have installed countless operating systems and fixed software and hardawrae comps for years now. I am still selling Win98 SE for as long as it is legally possible to do so.
Does a Program created in VB6 actually run on XP?
In a word YES .... with some qualifications.
IF you referenced a program that XP does not support and there are several of them, then NO, the program won't work. Also, XP has some backwards compatibility issues(even with older MS versions of the same program).
With the WIN XP the best program to use to write a program for it is .... VB.NET. Both are built on the same platform!
In defense of XP, if you are using Pro edition and not home like so many of the people obviously are there arn't many problems at all. I know a shitload about computers, and I have no problem getting around and doin what I want in Pro.
Now I have run the home edition on another computer before and it sucked royally. Thats the version that tries to control what you do. But that is because it's a 'Home' edition. Its made for the computer illiterate.
I'm still using VB6 and with win xp Pro I havn't had a single problem. And I've been running this way for about hrmm.. 6 months now I think.
And on the note of media player and making it harder on other CD players.. bull**** is all I have to say. I use MusicMatch as my primary CD player. Heck the only times I even use media player is ... well wait I never have on xp .. lol!
XP is an almost (notice almost) perfect blend of 2000 and 98. And the pro version is about twice as stable as either of the two.
Some people are just Microsoft haters...
I'm developing an application that was *supposedly* for Win2K professional, but have had to install it on XP (Pro).
The first installation onto XP using Package & deployment wizard failed miserably...
After reading up on Windows File Protection and a heap of other stuff pertaining to MDAC & DAO, I decided to upgrade MDAC from 2.6 to 2.7 and start using Windows Installer rather than Package & Deployment.
Once I'd recompiled the app using MDAC2.7, and created the Installer file, I test-installed it on Win2K - worked fine. Went and test-installed it on Wxp - worked fine.
All I can suggest is that if you're having problems with installing apps onto XP that were created for W2K (or earlier), read up on Windows File Protection. Consider recompiling the apps using MDAC2.7 and give the P & D wizard the flick.
Are there any newbie type documents to help transfer the correct things to Windows Installer. What do we need to know about Windows installer to get it working?
Lets face it, m$ want total control. XP looks kinda slick from the outside, but its guts are a mess. Kinda like OSX I guess.
If you want control, the last option m$ gave us was ME, and that was the biggest sh*t heap ever made, it had more bugs than 95. My best bet that i've had so far is run 98 all the way. Do a full reinstall every 3 months (1/4 year) and get all the bug fixes and stiff like that.
If you want a good OS, I do agree with StevenHickerson. XP Pro is not that bad, she runs pretty well and doesnt have the God awful big brother **** that its paranoid brother does.
But what are your other options: Linux? Yeah right, nothing supports it and looks like my shoulders after a week in Greece.
And who wants to use a Mac? Nuff said.
There is quite a bit of doco on Windows Installer on MSDN - its pretty simple to use (although installing it can be quite daunting....)
It is easier to use than the P & D wizard BUT you have to remember all about windows file protection. To get around the WFP, make sure all your supporting dll's and ocx's are located in the application folder on the target machine (and registered), and add a zero length file called [appname].exe.local to that folder.
Ok i haven't read the rest of this thread but i think your idea of Win98SE being the best so far is f*ed(no offense, lol)! Win98 and SE two of the EASIEST OS's to hack! so many security holes and problems that it is worthless. At the school i goto the OS installed is win98SE...hmmm i have a field-day with the system there...shhh! My rents win 98 se system crashes All the time with a new HD, supported HW correct drivers and proper things but i have Countlessly caught people inside their system. And no they weren't using kiddie **** trojans...I have been installing OS's for a few years..2 or so and try to put Win2000pro on the machines i work on. More stable(so i've found) better protection and easier to use in terms of operability. Got away from the stupid DOS backbone! :) DOS was good, everyone should praise DOS...how many programs crashed DOS??? not many and if it did it was most likely a VIRUS! :)Quote:

now to the winXP stuff...I love the new look to winXP but it is way too new. winXP is mostly configurabile as was 9x and the NT series and it also looks good. The presentation of a program is what attracts the users, not everyone is a tech. geek and thinks "well since i can't control the control panel in the way i used to be able to I'm switching to linux! VIVE LA PENGUINE!" I know for a fact that my tech. retarded girl will not be able to run linux. No matter how much i would like it to happen she is too much out of the tech world. Even with the Xwindowing system. There is no way it would happen. So it is good to have the windows alternative(never thought you'd hear that eh? Windows as an alternative?) But i do know that windows will always have many holes that can cause people serious issues.
my experience has led me to believe that windows is better than it seems. Many times things will screw up, more often than not, ok 90% of the time damnit! but if the person can use it and call me less to come help them learn how to make/config/exec a file in linux i'm happy. Things are getting better in linux but while people cry "Control control i want control" they think "OH **** I F*ED UP IT WASN"T THE OS THIS TIME NOOOOOOO!!!!! I LOSE MONEY AHHHHH" so yea it's good in that respect when the OS does it because it's not your fault...People don't like to be at fault ya know? Anyway, I figure this is enough of a rant. I will leave with this, VIVE LA PENGUINE until you decide that you can't take the people calling youc and asking for tech. support anymore(i'm sick of it at college imagine the entire world!) on the same repetive thing all the time(seems like some of the posts on this forum LOL). Use linux if you know how to, if you don't and are interested get a distro... wwwlinuxiso.com and you can download it! Learn it an have fun with your control. Be smart and backup your system first! But a good alt for now is win2K pro till XP gets to be a year or two old and has the more noticable bugs fixed up.
Just my two sense...

Urgent! Urgent! Urgent!
Q1) Recently, I just start to use VB6 with WinXP, i managed to compile my project in file->make name.exe, but i had encounted a problem after i compile and want to package it. i am using the package and deployment winzard, during package, after i selected all my files which i needed, come to final step-> finish.
but after i click finish, the screen blink once and the projext closed, when i go to the package folder, there is no single files inside, so after this if i go to deploy, of course it will say, there is no package been done.
Q2) when i using Win98, and then there is another problem appear "Out of memory!" during compilation->writing exe
is there anybody can help me in these two problems? please reply!! Thank you so much!
