You know those tips you can find in magazines or newspapers under the "Did you know that..." title? Well, I was thinking to try to have a thread about such things. You know, post things that are usually unknown to many, doesn't matter what field. Just make some sort of database of knowledge. The only rule is that each post must containt a true "did you know" statement.

Very interesting, Cilu. I remember a long time ago when I was a kid........I was reading up on so many mini-encyclopedias on "Did you know?" and other awesome-but-unimportant facts in the universe. Real cool, and brings back many nostalgic moments. Sigh. :cry:

Did you know that an American President classified Ketchup as a fruit, the reason state was that Ketchup consists mainly as Tomatus thus it is a fruit. The hidden reason was, that if you classify it as a fruit it is cheaper to buy for official institutes (schools etc.). The American government saved some million dollars with this. ;)

Fixed-wing aircrafts generate lift by passing air at different speeds above and below the wings. The difference in the wind speed creates the lift, which keeps the wing (and the plane afloat. The greater this difference, the more is the lift, which is proportional to the speed of the aircraft; lower the speed, smaller is the lift. Many a small aircrafts stall (lose the lift) when they are moving at slower than recommended speeds or are making sharp turns which reduces the speed.
It seems that when the wings of such airplanes are vibrated using sound emitting plastic coatings, they stay afloat even at slow speeds! The sound helps control the flow of air over the wings, reducing the chance of the aircraft stalling.
The research was conducted by Ian Salmon, an engineer with Qantas Airways in Sydney, while he was at the University of New South Wales. Tests using a barely audible sinusoidal tone of about 400 Hz (vibrations per second) showed a 22% increase in lift, compared with a standard wing. This could translate into a few extra seconds of time for a pilot to boost a plane’s speed before it stalls!
The technique could have other advantages. The size of a small plane’s wings is determined by the need to avoid stalls during take-off and landing. So if you use this device to improve lift at low speed, you can potentially decrease wing size, thereby reducing the plane’s weight and its fuel requirements.

The smallest island in the world - according to the Guiness Book of Records - is Bishop Rock. It lies at the most south-westerly part of the United Kingdom. It is one of 1040 islands around Britain and only has a lighthouse on it. In 1861, the British government set out the parameters for classifying an island. It was decided that if it was inhabited, the size was immaterial. However, if it was uninhabited, it had to be "the summer's pasturage of at least one sheep" - which is about two acres.
Going by the above parameters, most of the 179 584 "islands" around Finland and the almost 200 000 around Canada would not match Indonesia as the country with the most islands. In fact, Indonesia consists only of islands - 13 667 of them, 6000 of which are inhabited.

The guy on the US ten-dollar bill is, of course, Alexander Hamilton and he was killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr.
Hamilton was a revolutionary war hero and leading architect of the new American government. He co-authored the Federalist Papers, considered one of the most important contributions to American political thought. As Washington's right-hand man and the first US Secretary of the Treasury, he formulated an economic policy that got the then-new nation on its feet.
Aaron Burr was a colonel in the Continental Army and briefly served - as Hamilton did - with Washington at Valley Forge. In the election of 1800, he was in a deadlock with Thomas Jefferson for the presidency, with 73 votes each. The election went to the House of Representatives to be decided. There Federalist votes kept the election deadlocked until the 36th ballot, when Hamilton's influence gave the presidency to Jefferson. Burr, a Republican, became vice president.
Many at the time thought that the political mudslinging of Burr by Hamilton may have cost him the election. The animosity between the two men would continue until July 1804 when Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel, and as was customary, was accepted.
The fateful day came on July 11, 1804 at Weehawken, New Jersey. Vice President Aaron Burr and former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton faced off, and Hamilton was mortally wounded. He was dragged from the duelling area and died the next day. While the nation mourned, Burr returned to complete his term as vice president but his success in the duel proved to be to his detriment. There was some talk of murder charges being brought against him, but as the rules of the duel were followed, no indictment was carried forward. He would later go on to be charged for treason for his ill-fated attempt to establish his own empire in the South.

Although a cow has no upper front teeth, it grazes up to 8 hours a day, taking in about 45 kg (100 lb) of feed and the equivalent of a bath tub full of water. A healthy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.
A cow has four stomachs: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. The rumen is the largest stomach and acts as a fermentation chamber. The abomasum is last of the four and is comparable in both structure and function to the human stomach.
With all its grazing and many stomachs, it is no wonder that cows are one of the main contributors to the hole in the ozone layer. Apart from CFC, the biggest culprit is hydrocarbon emissions from cars and cows. Yes, cows! Cows release some 100 million tons of hydrocarbon annually - by releasing gas. To give you an idea of how much gas a cow emits: if the gas of 10 cows could be captured, it would provide heating for a small house for a year.
But unlike what you think, cows release hydrocarbon mostly by burping.
