Cool Firefox plugins...
Since this cool browser is coming up with so many really cool plugins, and innovative features - I thought we can do with a thread that discusses the latest innovative plugin... :)
Here's one that is in my opinion the best so far - The Viamatic Foxpose Plugin.
https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...=1457&vid=7825
It gives a preview of all tabs currently open.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I have the extension Firesomething 1.70
It changes the titlebar where it says Mozilla Firefox to something different on every session.
Today it's Mozilla Thunderostrich
Yesterday it was Mozilla Hypnopony
They get pretty funny.
Some more examples:
Watermule, Firejaguar, Waterklumpen, Fireanemone, Spacebuffalo, Firemole, Suncoyote etc etc etc
Not really a useful feature but.. Brings a random title each time. :P

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
For me, its the Tab X extension. It removes the close button at the end of the tab bar, and adds a close button on each of the browser tabs. I really found this useful, only now I discovered that you can close a tab by middle-clicking it. :o I still like it though. :D

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
www.noteme.com has a nice one that was written for vbf, but works well here.
he still hasn't updated it, but it works, for the most part.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I only use ChatZilla (IRC) and TamperData by now. With TamperData you can manipulate any form info (HTTP headers, post data, get data, cookies) before the request is being sent. Since I am currently exploring web programming, this helps to test and debug my first steps of web programming using ASPX and Perl.
I don't use any of the new plugins because I still believe that 1.5 uses up way to much memory. I am currently using either IE 6.0 or FF 1.0.7.

The Quick Tabs feature from IE 7 (beta) is looking better in my opinion.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Really you think so?
I see it waste 2/6 i.e. 33% screen space... ;)
-
Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Those plugins are cool, but need an enlargement lens or a 60" screen !!?

Yeah, I really do. :p So what? It looks like a photo album. I like it.
PS: I'm known as a great defender of IE. ;)

A space wastage of 33% for a photo album is real waste nevertheless... (Even photos can be optimally organized... )
FF plugin in comparison optimizes screen usage in a way that you can read the 4 pages (depending on screen resolution), and not be forced to view them as photographs... ;) :p

Okay... IE really does need one.
Anyways, reading the thread title / OP again might help... :D ;)

Well... That really depends on the size of your screen and the number of tabs open.
But, you can do this: CTRL + Scroll Mouse
Try it... Might help. ;)

Creative indeed... But, I think this is not available for FF 1.5+. Right?

I use Sage as a Firefox add-in. It is useful for looking at RSS information.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I haven't really explored the available plugins. However, what I have always been wanting is a way to spell-check a form on a webpage before submitting it. Does anyone know if there is such a thing?

Perhaps, Google Toolbar does exactly what you are looking for...

If I could have just the one button added, and not create a new row, that'd be acceptable. Maybe I'll install the thing later and see if it can be configured that way, but it don't look like it.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
OooH!...OooH!...
I should do a little searching before asking stuff like that:
http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
That one doesn't seem to be compatible with the latest version of FF... Or have I overlooked something?

I've been looking it over since posting the link. Thus far I think it's supposed to work with all versions from 1.0. Check here and see what you think.

I am not sure if 1.5.0.4 is supported...
Quote:
Firefox 0.8, 0.9.x, ALL 1.0.x Releases, and numerous Trunk builds. I currently only support SpellBound with Firefox 1.0 or greater which includes Trunk builds.
On downloading, I get an installation error saying that it is compatible only with 0.9 to 1.0+ (presumably, it means that 1.5.0.4 is not considered as 1.0+).
Is it working for you?

Wow, maybe they have a bug in the version checking function? I imagine there may be a way to do it anyway, but you'd have to pour over the documentation and select whatever files it needs. I don't plan to dig that deep.
I have yet to try it, as I'm currently using a Netscape build which I may leave for FF anyway. Thus far it looks like it will probably work fine, so I'll more than likely give it a try later today. I'll be sure to post the results. If it works I'll stick with the browser I have until FF includes the inline spell-checking function, which I've read is coming soon anyway :)
Still, I wish it had an easier way to access it than Ctrl+Shift+F7. Oh well, can't have everything...that is until someone writes the extension :)

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Check this about Spellbound:
http://www.qando.net/details.aspx?entry=4130
<EDIT>
It says it's on the context menu!! Now that's more like it!! :thumb:  :D

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Interesting... It describes exactly the problem I face... Unfortunately, the URL to the download it recommends isn't working.
Google's Toolbar based check is pretty good and is working fine for me so far... So, I'll continue with it.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Guess what...
Seems the Mozilla site already has one:
https://addons.mozilla.org/addon.php?id=1022
Now that I've gone in a complete circle...

And I read this from that blog site:

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I dont know whats wrong with my browser... Perhaps, I am plain unlucky with this spell check extension. My browser now says that it is installed... But, when I select it from the Conetxt Menu - it claims to not be installed (kind of ridiculous message given that I clicked it in the first place... :D ).
Lets see... I'll try on another PC later today...
-
Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
The link to the updated Spellbound worked fine for me, so I have the file. If you want it, I suppose I could post it? Then apparently you drop it into your browser and it installs (still I haven't tried yet).
-
Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I have it downloaded too... I'll try it later today. Thanks for the find... :)

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I think "SwitchProxy" would be very useful for my laptop... I wanted to have something like this for a while now... :)
Thanks for sharing... :thumb:

Wiz, dropping AspellFox into my browser also didn't help... I'll try it later, and on another PC...
-
Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
No Problem dude, i would recommend IE Tab if you want to visit websites which insists you use IE.
And LiveHttpHeaders are useful if you want to monitor the traffic of the websites you are visiting.
Anyway, keep introducing new FireFoz extensions...who knows...i may need some of them.

Don't forget the library file too. Apparently there's two files to install. With Spellbound, I tried a few things, and got as far as the context menu option opening the spell checking dialog. But it gave a message about the missing library first, so there wasn't a dictionary for it to work off of.
I'll be trying the other libraries when I get the chance. I don't know which one if any are for the build I have.
AspellFox didn't work at all no matter which way I tried. Probably not compatable.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Mouse Gestures, and Firebug. These are my favourite extensions of all time.
Tab Mix Plus is cool too.

Firebug looks nice... :) :thumb:

Any interesting plugins, folks?
BTW, to say that Firefox leaks is to make a polite understatement - right?
(Check attached image... Taskmanager tells that FF consumes 1 GB on my PC. )
Does anyone know of this issue or an existence of a solution... ?
-
Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
Agree. I use FoxClocks to display the time and date in Fx.

That probably depends a lot on your plugins and what kind of sites you visit (i.e. lots of flash etc.). My firefox has been running for 2 days now and it only consumes 150 MB.

Ssshhh... :D
(We don't want people to know this, do we... ?)
Normally, my FF is consuming around 250 MB at worst. However, this time I was surprised to see an instance with only about 5 Tabs take so much from my system. Of these tabs, one for sure was CG. :D

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
(Glances at list of installed extensions... blimey, have I got that many?)
The ones I can't live without:
- Adblock+/Adblock Filterset.G updater
- All-in-one gestures
- All-in-one sidebar
- FlashGot (combined with FreeDownloadManager)
- Greasemonkey
- IE Tab
- Permit Cookies (or Cookie Culler)
- Sage
- Session Manager
- Tab Mix Plus
- UI Tweaker (Lets you use the dead space to the right of the menu - saves on a toolbar)
Useful ones:
- Bugmenot
- Extended statusbar
- Foxmarks
- Imagezoom
- Print preview
- Restart firefox (simple, but great for when you update the extensions)
- Smiley Xtra
- Stylish

Well, not only that once you hit 30-40 tabs...there is this tendecy that FF will crash.... Tried it a few times and only once did it not crash...hope they fix the bug if this is really a bug and not my PC's problem.

Well, to me a leak would be when memory isn't released once the app terminates. I'm not very familiar with Java, but in the bit that I've done I don't recall much for cleanup code if any. I guess the garbage collection is relied upon for that. Once loaded, classes stay in memory until the app terminates, yes?
I do have a few extensions, but not many. Resource usage is always pretty low whenever I've checked, but I can't say I've looked after it's been running for many, many hours, or with tons of tabs open.
Oh, and SpellBound is soooo handy! I couldn't get Aspell to work though. The spell checking algorithm is poor IMHO, but the inline checking is perfect for pointing out the typos.

Re: Cool Firefox plugins...
I have installed Firefox 2.0 and find it faster than the previous version I had - 1.5.x.
I must inform that "SwitchProxy" if installed with a previous version wont work with 2.0 (in fact, you will be informed at install time that SwtichProxy wont be available for use).
The replacement addon would be FoxyProxy:

BTW, I just found out that CTRL + Click will open a link (or a bookmark) in a new Tab, while SHIFT + Click will open the same in the new window... :)

Yeah, I've been using the Ctrl+Click since one of the first Tabbed versions of Netscape, but I don't recall the Shift-Click feature being there, and hadn't tried till just now - thanks for that :)
Any notable new features in 2.0? I think I read that inline spell checking was going to be standard so an add-in/plugin wouldn't be needed.
