Well, I was mainly talking about people going/being away.. not necessarily due to the same reason. :) :DQuote:

Ok, I was a bit irritated yesterday and I might have started this thread without thinking too much but those ads are SOOOOOOO annoying!!!
You click on the "expand forum" link and they still don't go away!
I can't even see half the forum anymore and it is a MAJOR pain in the butt when I am on codeguru.
Those ads HAVE TO GO! They are ruining codeguru!!! :mad:
I believe you will find most if not all of the troublesome ads have gone away. The issue did not go unnoticed, as I'm sure you can imagine.
I suppose it would also be wise to point out that some blame seems to rest with Flash 8, which is why I'm still using version 7 ;)
Perhaps Brad will drop by and say a few words as well...
Yeah, they have been replaced by more friendlier versions. :thumb:
Farewell to CPU and screen hungry ads. :cool:

I guess that is IBM's way of capturing people's attention. May be they want to be humorous and at the same time telling people that they can provide help to handle the fat and ugly side of information management !?! :rolleyes: :D
I guess it must have backfired causing some of us to lose appetite. On the other hand, it may be good for people on diet. :D
I'd bet that includes the marketshare for the next decade? I remember people getting fired if they didn't choose IBM. Things are looking kind of bleak...
David, please don't scare us. Do you mean that we are really in danger now, especially Deniz? :eek: :D :D
The war seems to be starting, unfortunately... Someone has to take the lead....!
fare the well.. have a nice trip :wave:
There are still IBM ads, just ones which are less CPU-hogging. Also, once they finish playing, the load stops too.
Deniz : If you can install a web server on your computer, you'll be able to "filter" web pages via the loopback interface:
In that case, write a cgi script, such as:
Code:#!/bin/bash
# forumdisplay.cgi
wget -O- -s --load-cookies cookies.txt "http://www.codeguru.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?$QUERY_STRING" 2>/dev/null|perl extract_codeguru_forum.pl
Excuse my poor perl coding. I'm a beginner.Code:# extract_codeguru_forum.pl
<>;
until(($_=<>) eq "\n") {
print $_ unless m%^\s*Content-Length\s*:%i;
}
print "\n\n<html><head><style";
$/="<style";<>;
$/="</style>";$_=<>;print $_,qq(</head><body><table class="tborder" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" border="0" width="100%" align="center">);
$/="<!-- show threads -->";<>;
$/=">";
while(<>) {
last if m%<!-- / controls below thread list -->%;
s%(<img.*?src\s*?=\s*?")(.*?)(?=")%$1http://www.codeguru.com/forum/$2"%msg;
s%(<a.*?href\s*?=\s*?")([^#].*?)(?=")%$1http://www.codeguru.com/forum/$2"%msg;
print;
}
print "</body></html>\n";
Deniz....don't go!...if you go, who'll gonna pay me your debt?...you still owe me $10...:D
what if, a member with 500 or more posts can have an option to get rid of the ads...not permanently, but the ads will be shown once for every month...as long as they not clear up the cookies or cache or whatever it may concern...after all, most of CG's visitors are guests....so the IBM or whatever advertised products can still reach it's target...
but the drawback is, the guests or 500 and less posts members(like me:D) still get the annoying ads....so just get rid of the un-enviromental friendly ads, please....:D...
That has been done. The ads are significantly more friendly to the CPU, though there is still *some* noticable load when certain Flash ads play. Try to keep in mind that Flash 8 is part of the problem, so it's not all the fault of the ad people. Also, ads often come from third-party servers, so CG doesn't have total say in what ads are served. There's a limit to what can be done when issues arise, but be assured that the matter was given a high priority. Brad really got things done!Quote:

IMHO, rather than being reactive and take action when CG members complain. I believe that CG is fully capable of testing the ads proactively on a small range of PCs before releasing it to the public. Simiarly, the ads people should also be capable of doing it before it causes too much grievances. :cry:Quote:

I am not sure if Flash 8 is all to blame - for, I dont get the CPU usage issue with any other website using flash for advertisements other than CG.
The advertisments that I've seen devour my CPU probably do so because of the effects they use (like Fog effects and Steam effects) - the CPU hogging of the ad. goes away once those effects are over.
However, it could be true that these effects are newly supported by Flash 8? Or that with F8, these are specially rendered, and / or slowly done.
Ads are always checked and tested. But again, CG doesn't create nor control many of the ads. Those who do are expected to test, and yes there are people who check before accepting an ad. I don't have all the details on how that is done, but I am guessing the reviewers have been mainly concerned with approving the content more than the CPU usage. After all, this sort of thing just isn't a problem with animated gif images, and I for one haven't seen it much with Flash either until more recently.Quote:

or they use the new feature in Flash 8 called Alpha channel...which is also a reasource hog...just my opinion:D...hmmm....
