Today I have been facing frequent hangs in the CG IE windows.. Is anyone else experiencing the same? I usually open all threads in a forum and then browse them but it is even happening when I have 2 or 3 open.. There is nothing specific about the pages that freeze. Rest of the browsing is fine.
I use IE 6.0.
I've not had any issues using firefox. Ad performance seems normal (not high), so I'm not sure what the issue is.
Anyone else having trouble?
DEFINITELY YES, something is VERY wrong with these forums.
Firefox crashed so many times that I use only IE for being here. IE also stops responding after a few pages navigated. Maybe this has something to do with the flash plugin. I have all latest versions and patches for both IE, Windows and Firefox.
Yesterday I was browsing the forums for hours and I had to uninstall my Kerio firewall, because of constant crashes and disconnections. :mad:
I'll cross my fingers for this post to appear before everything is screwed up again.
EDIT: Like with the topic starter, problems seem to appear only when opening >1 pages.

Of course in Firefox I only use 1 window... that's the idea behind it. :)
Do the problems in IE happen only when CG is opened in multiple windows, or also with other websites?
I don't use IE anymore, but when I had issues with it in the past, clearing the cache often helped me... Just try it...
CG with multiple open windows. Not found this with other web sites.. will try that out..
I am facing the same problem I am using IE6.0.2900.2180 win xp sp2.
Suddenly IE freezes it happens only with CG site I have to kill IE in order get out from this freeze mode.
PS: just a shot in the dark, probably it has something to do with those ads :(

If it is the ads then I would take a blunt guess to the AMD one. The one where you hover it occupies about one third of the screen and I need to hover out of that area to hide it. Just a guess, though.
I experience this sometimes. When opening CG my browser (IE6) just hangs. I thought it was just my pc but after learning that it's not just me who've experienced this... something must be wrong then :)
I think it's the atdmt site. Problems with two tabs both showing the same ad, I would guess.
I have the same problems (with the latest IE 7 beta), and AFAICT, it's always related to those new AMD ads. :mad:

Well I disabled the Shockwave Flash activex from the "Manage add-ons" list and problem's gone. :)
The loss of Flash is not big deal since I only use IE for CG and MSDN. (MSDN pages are better displayed on my cell phone than on FireFox)
I have browsed Codeguru rigorously today with about 20 open windows... and no crashes or anything occured.. it is working fine..
Since I started this .. I thought I update on the status... Though I am not sure what has happened.. there may be changes from the CG side (ads modified/replaced/anything else) or the suggestion by Siddhartha worked!

hey Abhishek i think oply myself getting this Propblem .but Dude From last 4 to 5 days when ever i tried Something Codeguru it goes hang.

Now my browser (IE6) always hang up when opening the codeguru site. :( As of the moment I'm using mozilla. I hope this problem gets fixed. :(

Can anything be done? It is miserable browsing CG today. My home PC might have got infected with some worms (not sure, will run a complete scan soon) but the office one is perfectly fine. IE 6.0.2900.2180 (XP service pack 2). I open two pages User CP in both and both hanged quite a few times. I don't have the flash player installed too.. but still. No upgrades recently. I wonder what has changed.
It doesn't let me work at all. Also, due to this the "Last Post" functionality is even not working. When I write a reply and the window hangs - I am not able to retrieve what I had written earlier...
I lost a number of posts due to this. It is frustrating to lose your posts like this.. and they were very nicely written... I don't have the tempo of writing the same thing again and hence did not...
Please help us with this, if possible. :)

Also, I cannot get Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape/Opera or any other browser installed... I "have to" work with IE...

Note : This is not happening when browsing other sites and it has to be the AMD add that comes on the right side of the page and at the bottom of it when in the User Control Panel.

I've asked Joe to again look at this. If nothing is determined today, then I'll elevate this to higher powers within the company to see what can be done.

It would also help to have the system specs of those who are getting crashes. I have seen CPU spikes while the ad is running, but I can't reproduce any hanging or crashes.
I have seen the crashes and IE freezes too (mostly crashes), and I'm pretty certain that it can happen even if there's only one CG window open.
I use IE 6.0. At home, the OS is XP Pro SP2; at work, it's NT Pro. Both systems are 3 gHz Pentiums with 1 gig RAM.
I'm also pretty certain that it's the ad.
At work, IE will freeze for extended periods, like 2-3 minutes. Eventually it wil re-waken, but sometimes I get the OS_generated dialog that states "this application has encountered an error and must be terminated...do you want to send an error report".
At home, IE does not freeze. But since I have Visual Studio on my home system, VS starts up and indicates the IE has faulted in "FLASH9.OCX" (I'll double check for the exact fault next time it happens). That's why I think it's the ad.

That's comparable to my system here, and I can't even get a hang, let alone a crash. There has to be some conflict of software going on. Can you check the version of flash player you're using?
At work, Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 r19, version 7,0,19,0

Earlier I had problems accessing codeguru again. But now everything seems to be fine. What I did was, I removed the cookies for codeguru and I logged back in. So far no more IE hang ups. :D
btw I have IE v6.0 and flash 8,0,22,0 installed.
At home, Adobe Flashplayer 9.0 r16, version 9,0,16,0, which makes sense since the at-home error displayed by Visual Studio is "FLASH9.OCX"

And I spoke too soon :cry: IE just hang up again and now I'm having trouble accessing codeguru with IE. It just hangs up. :(
For those of you using Firefox and having in lock up, please let me know the following:
Firefox Version (look in Help --> About)
Extensions (look in Tools -->Extensions). Either capture the pupup window that lists them (Alt-PrtScrn) or list the names and versions.
I can't get my system to lock up, so I'll try to duplicate the extensions and versions and see if I can narrow things down.

I just got a crash with the AMD ad.
Firefox 1.5.0.6
Extensions:
Googlebar Lite
Adblock 0.5.3.043
CGExtension 1.0 (my own extension, deactivated when the crash happened)
Just to clarify I don't get crashes.. I get hangs/frozen IE windows... the same as non-crash victims are getting. I usually don't have the patience to see if the frozen window is back to normal state in 30-50 seconds or so.. so I use taskkill to kill IE. But today, I left two frozen windows the same (did not "End Task" them) while reading other threads and looks like the frozen window comes alive like others said.
At home I have : (let me check)
Adobe flash player 9 ActiveX ; Java runtime env 5 update 6 ; No IE add-ons.. ; IE 6.0.2600.0000 ; Win XP Pro (v 2002) ;
and 128 MB ram and 866 MHz processor :( [very old computer]

LMAO, just now when I was about to post I do not have any crashing problems with either IE or Firefox at work or home, my Firefox crashes. This is the first time! That is because I was too eager to post, I mouse-scroll before the page is fully loaded: something I do not usually do.
Maybe you guys can try waiting the page to be fully loaded, to see if my observation is true.

That's correct, i always get a crash (with firefox) when the page is not fully loaded (and the right ad is not visible) and i move my mouse over a link. Just got two crashes in a row for this reason :D. I'm going to try to browse CG in safe mode to see if it's really an extension problem.Quote:

I've been trying like heck to reproduce this in IE and FF and I have yet to succeed. I'm posting this in FF and I normally visit the site in IE (well, and IE shell, maxthon). I've tried vanilla IE as well. No dice.
This issue is sneaky....
We are working to figure it out. Not sure if it is add-in, an ad, or a combination of the two.

Can you install and run Microsoft Fiddler. This tracks HTTP requests. This might help us point a finger at a specific ad or item.

In addition, would someone else getting the crashes try disabling Flash for a while and see if that stops the issue? That'll help us determine if it's a flash player mismatch issue with an ad.
Another question for the FF users who are crashing: How many tabs open when this occurs? Does it vary greatly?
Okay I tried what exterminator had said and he's right. :eek: IE actually "hangs up" for just a few minutes. I tried waiting for about 10 mins and IE woke back up again :eek: I'll try installing the Fiddler as Brad has suggested.
Ok here's what I got. I surfed CG until IE hang up. I then executed fiddler and found that IE is trying to open stream.atdmt.com (see image). At first I thought it was just something from my IM (yahoo). I waited until CG wakes up again and found out that CG woke up when the connection to stream.atdmt.com was closed. I hope this helps :)
I've mentioned ATDMT before, but they aren't the only ones. Here's what I just saw, again! (not atdmt) Two CG tabs, and three other ones, which never crash.
atdmt is a spyware :eek: Maybe this is the one causing all this trouble.
Not in my case. Its something else.
I have removed the spyware using spybot search and destroy software and I thought my problems were gone. Earlier I again experienced the hang up and when I looked at fiddler, I again found the atdmt spyware :eek:. Am I correct in saying that there's a spyware in CG? :eek: Any inputs?
Here's a snapshot of the result from fiddler.
There's no spyware here. The most that's ever downloaded onto a user's PC from any JM site is a cookie.
I must admit that I havent got any freezes for the last 2 days (neither at home nor at office).
