So, members of CG... do you believe in superstition? :)
I guess it would also be interesting if you can also share at least one superstition you have in your country.

There is one which goes something like this: If a cat crosses your way, then something bad is gonna come your way soon.
Well, not that I beleive in it, but it was funny when once, when a bunch of u were going on a road trip, when we were just starting out after a break, a cat crossed the road right in front of us before we got into the freeway, and we hadn't gone a few miles, when my friend who was driving, got cited by a cop for overspeeding :D We all had a good laugh :D:D
Somewhat :) i Generally tend not to believe in these, ut sometimes i dont know what happens to me , and i do every thin , even if i dont believe in them, hmmmm :(Quote:

thats such a bad sayin, like i said earlier, i generally do not believe in all this, but when i step out for an important day or something, that really would mean a lot to me and , then TADA a cat crosses the road, il be like ( okey, now there was a sayin like this, hmmm and i need today to work out for me, so why take the risk :) ) and then , il be either taking a break from the trip or il be taking a diversion.
lol Kirants was faster in posting the reply ;) , aaah but again there you go you have proof for the Myth ;)
Ps: so Cherish how come you have not voted or said anythin abt the same ice breaker, so what do you have to say ?
Intesting! We have the same superstition in Philippines. Or, is it a universal type of superstition? Maybe this thing came from ancient Egyptians? Hmm... http://forums.codeguru.com/Quote:

Ah, well... I guess it depends on the person's view on the matter. It's not necessarily on my list. :)Quote:

Ah, similar with what Kiran shared. :DQuote:

Thats intresting to know :D i wonder how many more ppl are gonna say that its there in their country too ...are there any Egyptians here ?? we could verify ;)Quote:

so the story goes like this, i was up from bed and and half asleep i just rubbed my eyes, my room mate then says to me " stop doin that cos you'l have bad luck, its sounded rather silly to me and i laughingly ask him, what the relation between my eyes and bad luck. he tries to explain ( tho i dont rem what exactly he said that day, as it made no scense to me ). later in the day, in the eve after colg, thats when my friends and my self were return back, out of the blue all of us decide to do some racing on your bikes, and after the race wen we come back and park our bikes, what you know, the cops sieze all our bikes and all of us get tickets. :(.
to date i say this incidet to the same friend of mine and we laugh at how things went that day ...
Well, there's Queen Nefertiti... :DQuote:

I once did that wanting to find out and so i delibrately crossed a cats path, and could not conclude on any results, as i did not see tha cat again :D
LOL!! Well, I guess that's proof enough. You must have scared the heck out of that poor cat... :DQuote:

I do not believe in superstition of any kind, probably I am just too pragmatic. However, I slowly start to believe that everytime that I go to toilet someone is going to ring on my door or my mobile. It happens just too often :|
Excuse me, I think the thread title is an irony. Nobody would think the superstitions he/she believes in, are superstitions. To that person, his/her superstitions are the truth and other superstitions (other than his own) are superstitions which he/she would not believe. :D
No, but it's funny to call bad luck doing the bad things supposed to be unlucky, such as walking under a ladder and so on.
BTW, welcome back cherish
Well... Note that the question is not "do you believe in a superstition", nor is it "are you superstitious"... ;)Quote:

Not that I believe in superstitions, but some habits just dont go away...
Like saying 'touchwood' when praising someone near or telling someone about own achievement. e.g. "I am lucky not to have an accident while driving. touchwood".
:( I just had an accident 3 weeks back.. so it seems touchwood doesnot work :( Good that I want hurt much :)
yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo :D finally someone :)
@chmanish: No offence , just that many were tryin to out number me, well just happy to have company ;) :)
Interesting. We also have something similar, but we say: "Knock on wood"Quote:

One relative of mine does everything twice. Like he comes in thru the door, then goes out and then comes in again!!
He owns a medical shop.. so when the customer asks for some medicine, he gets them, then takes them back and again hands them to the customer.
but that has now become a habit more than a superstition.
@sreehari: Ek se bhale do!
Well, here's another one in the group! :D
1. Sneezing near someone who is going out somewhere is supposed to cause problems (not of any specific sort)
2. Don't ask where a person is going at the time the person is going...
I get into these 2 sometimes.. ;)
Then there's another one - not getting a haircut on specific days - this I think I knowingly or unknowingly follow -- because I usually get a haircut on Sundays.. :D (well, I don't have time during the weekdays) and I avoid Saturdays... :D btw I don't recall the story/myth behind this... :ehh:
@exterminator: So what would happen if you do ask a person where they are going? I mean, you didn't mention what would happen if one doesn't observe that particular superstition.
Don't know exactly but something like the trip/travel gets disrupted in some way.. you won't be successful in what you went out for.. anything.. I mean.. it's just stated that ask the person but not when he is on his way at the door..Quote:

The culture and the dynasties that revered cats are long since extinct... :D
but it could also be that the CAT godess is tryin to say something, and does not want you to go there ( where ever you were goin ) ;) :DQuote:

Another (equally rain-related) superstition goes like this: Carrying with you a fancy stick with a polygonal wire frame, covered by fabric (traditionally black silk, but it can be replaced by motley coloured synthetics these days) will very efficiently prevent rain from falling. Actually, I've been able to confirm this myself: If you bring this relic, chances are very good that it will not rain. But leave it at home, and you're almost guaranteed to end up in a heavy shower... :D
I wasn't saying that it's the other way around. :)Quote:

Interestingly, I found the following info from a website:
But since superstition about cats are not only in Egypt, that belief must've come from somewhere else... http://forums.codeguru.com/Quote:
Cats were sacred to the goddess, Isis in Egyptian mythology.
Archaeologists in Egypt found cat cemeteries from which a shipment of embalmed cats was taken to England. In Egypt it was believed that a black cat crossing one's path brought good luck.
poor cats. Don't know how they got associated with evil things ;)
Anyways, here are few more which I grew up listening to:
- Do not trim nails at night. If you do, I don't know what befalls ;)
- If you whistle at night, it would attract snakes.
- If something repeats twice in succession, the third one WILL follow
If Mr. Focker of "Meet the parents" knew that, probably he would have dyed the whole cat black instead of just the tail. Things probably would've turned out good for him then :DQuote:
it was believed that a black cat crossing one's path brought good luck.
Interesting superstitions there, Kiran. I haven't heard of those, except maybe for the third one. :) Thanks for sharing.
LOL!! Probably. :DQuote:
