How do good programmers get rich?

The vast majority dont. The people who DO get rich are the good business men (or women). In rate cases there is a balance (which may lean heavily in one firection or the other) that makes it seem that a programmer can get rich.

This is based on over 30 years of observation.

Good programmers can get rich if they do not open source their code, hopefully the unique Intellectual Property applications which they code in their free time, get a critical mass of users, so that some company may offer to buy their applications and the source code or they find some Venture Capitalists(VCs) to open a company. The bottomline is you must have some Intellectual Properties(IPs) which you can use as a leverage. You cannot get rich by working for others. That is my opinion only.

Well, to be philanthropic, we have to be rich first. TT(n) has a point, if your mind is not centered on getting rich, just being content with what you have, you can be happy, unless you are in extreme poverty now. Helping and volunteering to help out the less fortunate people (in the old folks home or children's home) can be very rewarding too, though not in monetary terms. You can choose to be either spiritually rich or money rich! Whatever it is, you must ensure you have saved enough money for your retirement!

If you chase after money, you would never be genuinely happy, because when you have $500,000, you will be happy for a while before you think that you can actually have $600,000: When you have had $600,000, you would want to have $700,000, your happiness is always short-lived.

Money does NOT buy happiness....but it does offer some very attractive lease options.

In general there are many factors that help getting rich in a honest way; first, you must be a hard working man, then you must have sense of business, and finally you must be a bit lucky.
Of course it's important where you live; in some countries is easier getting rich than other.

It's true, money doesn't give happiness, but it's better crying into a Ferrari than crying in the middle of a street without having nothing...

Sure, for the individual, so long as you can sleep at night knowing that world hunger, and disease is still widespread.
If only we could do what's best for ourselves, and what's best for the group(world).

The same way anyone gets rich....you need to have something that millions of people are willing to pay a few dollars for, or something that one person is willing to pay millions of dollars for!

There is a saying in the West that "Money is the root of all evils", this is wrong, it is rather that "The lack of money is the root of all evils". So we must not be too poor either.
