Re: How Do I learn Python?

I learnt Python as my fourth programming language, so it was more about learning syntax, idioms, and libraries rather than learning how to program. I think I just read one or two tutorials that outlined the syntax, then started using the Python documentation, all the while also going through the tutorial for a Python web framework that I was trying to learn. Later I read more advanced material on blogs and books that provided better idiomatic context to Python.

All advice is offered in good faith only. All my code is tested (unless stated explicitly otherwise) with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio (using the supported features of the latest standard) and is offered as examples only - not as production quality. I cannot offer advice regarding any other c/c++ compiler/IDE or incompatibilities with VS. You are ultimately responsible for the effects of your programs and the integrity of the machines they run on. Anything I post, code snippets, advice, etc is licensed as Public Domain and can be used without reference or acknowledgement. Also note that I only provide advice and guidance via the forums - and not via private messages!

Re: How Do I learn Python?

For a these "how do I learn xxx" questions, start with google and dive in.

Asking folks for input on how they learned something probably will have very little value to you when you get right down to it.

There isn't any magic article that someone can point you to and make learning something new programming-wise easy.

So give it a go yourself. Do a google search of the topic and add a few words like "tutorial" or "step by step". Look at a few links and try to follow along. If something is too hard, move on to something else. Keep at it and you'll pick up a little something from each article and before long things will start to make sense. Try to stay focused though and stick with one thing (like mysql or mvc or python). If you are new to programming it would be very difficult to learn multiple things at once so stick to one thing. Best of luck.

I used this book to start with Python: "Think Python" by Allen B. Downey. You could give it a try.
