Windows (and VS) on ARM hardware !!

I've an ancient Apple Mac Mini here running Windows 10. I kinda like it because it's totally silent !

But various online sites are suggesting that Windows 11 will now run on ARM. And apparently Visual Studio 17 will soon run on it.

Hmmm... maybe it's time to update that old Mac Mini

Yes, I think you should consider upgrading your old Mac Mini. Windows 11 on ARM is a truly new and interesting platform. I bought a new PC for daughter and it has Windows 11, but because of lack of time I don't have opportunity to explore it more. Plan to do it next few days

Well the original Windows NT was designed to run on different hardware and was/is available for:

    MIPS
    IA-32
    Dec Alpha
    PowerPC
    Itanium

Re: Windows (and VS) on ARM hardware !!

Interesting stuff - and it's good to see CodeGuru sending email notifications again!

IIUC Apple included an Intel emulator when it moved to ARM (i.e. so that uptake users would be able to carry on running their previous apps on the new OS). I'm not sure if Microsoft will do something similar.

[Edit...] I just found this article. A couple of paragraphs down, it suggests that Windows 10 is also available for ARM (albeit restricted to only 32-bit apps).

I thought Windows 10 had been obsolete for years

The final version of Windows 10 Workstation is 22H2 which was last updated 12 Sep 2023. It becomes 'obsolete' 13 Oct 2025.

Windows 10 is not yet obsolete, but it will be in 2025. Microsoft has also released an ARM version of Windows 10. However, the ARM version of Windows 10 is not as widely supported as the Intel version and can only run 32-bit applications.
