    new ads :thumbd:

There was a thread here about the new ads. Just when to reply to it vanished...

Wht can I say. Probably that in the near future the space that is allocated for the ads will be used for actual forum discutions and the rest of the page for ads.

Yes, there are wider ads on the index pages now. I was able to get my superiors to agree to leave them off the primary thread pages here at CodeGuru. On all the other Jupitemedia sites, they will be on every page.

Maybe...there should be a poll what the members of this site think about these new ads...and the results should be presented to the superiors...

No need for a poll. I can tell you what the results will be.....

It was knowing what the results of such a poll would be that caused me to take a very (very) strong stance against these ads taking up so much room. The results were a compromise in that the big ads are not on every page of this forum.

(But be aware, I am letting the appropriate people know the feedback that happens)

I think that it would be best to put these adds either on the top or have them reworked so that they become slimmer.
Here are the rules, you must obey them or the gender bender will get you.

And if you ever think of posting without code-tags, the evil monkey will come after you.

Well...yes...I guess we need an ironic smiley...which my previous reply was...

    I definitely know that...

Another question or suggestion...why aren't they putting these kind of ads at the top of the site next to (or instead of) the already existing wide one? The height is more or less the same, thus, it wouldn't hurt us that much in my eyes...

Yes Andrew is right, you should rather put those ads on top or on bottom of the page and not on the right side...

    Re: new ads :thumbd:

The ad position is what we call a 'flex' ad. This position will actually display three different sized ads. One is a skyscraper like what was here before, on is like what most of you are seeing now, an ad about 300x280 in size. A third ad is an ad that is a combination of the two that is as wide as the wider ad and as tall as the taller ad. It is this third ad type that is expected to increase in number here.

So - putting this ad at the top is not the best option, because you could end up with an ad that is 800 pixels tall pushing everything off the page.

Brad, you have created a thread about this, but then quickly removed it. Why?

I am letting the appropriate people know the feedback that happens
What about setting a "meeting" with them here so they can see what is CG members reaction to this advertasing way. The old way (which still persists in some situations) was very good, for both sides...

I'm just a regular visitor. I sometimes post.

This WILL make me avoid this site. I came searching the feedback forum just to see what was being said about this PROBLEM. And it is a problem on my screen.

I remove the thread I started because it would be more reflective of the forum if a member started such a thread rather than me. I had thought I had pulled it off before it was viewed, but you guys are too fast . (My intent was to then point internal people to such a thread...)

    Brad!
Actually, I think that having an ad 800 pixels tall pushing everything off the page might actually be an improvement from the way things are set up now. Since the existing ads are so wide and nothing appears beneath them, they result in a ludicrous amount of wasted space on each page. Either way, they're incredibly intrusive. As someone else said, I won't want to keep posting here with the way things are currently. These ads go beyond being an annoyance; they actively harm the site's ability to present useful information.

Is there no other alternative? I understand that you're in a tough spot here, and I know how difficult it can be to keep a site of this size running without losing money on it, but surely there's some way to manage this without ruining the site's layout.
