After doing the dumb thing of turning off my puter, I ran into a strange problem when I turned it on again. This is Windows 95.
It failed to boot with the error msg: "CD-ROM drive #0 found on 170h port Slave device, v17B" That did not start my day well at all. I did manage to find a 3.5 floppy labeled
"Windows Startup" and booted from that to get in "Safe Mode". Then I did a check of the hard drive and ran ScanDIsk completely including a Surface scan. Not a single problem was found.
Things were fairly OK but I had lost my virtual drive 'D' which I use heavily. and I needed a good boot to regaine it. So I attempted to make a new "Startup Disk".
I got the msg: "Scandisk.exe could not be found copy from C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS" It said insert Windows CD which I did but it still did not work. It gave me the option of skipping the file which I did. It then proceded and stoped again saying:
"Setup detected error while loading C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\SCANDISK.EXE"
All of this - and it appears to be for lack of the ScanDisk file which I had just executed very successfully. Are ther TWO such files? I have a SCANDISK.EXE at
C:\Windows\Command. Any one with an idea or where I can download the "OPTIONS\CABS\SCANDISK.EXE" ??? Am I likely to exacerbate the problem if I re-install Windows 95?
Oh yesm at some point in all this and I don't remember where I get the msg:"VFAT not Present or Unmovable" that's a really neat message! Yes I tried searching Microsoft- no luck.
But on the other hand Life is Good!.
