How can we make the CG site even better...

    I happened to visit http://www.hardwaregeeks.com

their site has such a shocking resemblance to CG - is CG affiliated with them in any way?

But they do some cool stuff like display an msn or yahoo or other IM icon along with reputation and the author's image of choice along with each post...

    http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/s...t=20414&page=2

They also allow for rich media content to be included as part of each posting as opposed to it being just an attachment...

I think their site looks very much like CG and in some areas, it feels and looks better...

Does anybody feel that we can use some such prepping up for our site?

I've already asked about that in the feedback forum, but I guess it's not going to happen.

Does everyone on that site have 10 reputation green squares, being beyond repute? That what awaits us? (a splendid one to behold, has much to be proud of, has a brilliant future)

They are using the same underlying software.

As to the images -- they are allowing images in the signature lines. We don't because it clutters up the site and ends up being a bunch of advertisements that we constantly would have to ask people to remove.

As to images in the text of the bodies linked to attachments -- attachments are stored in a database so instead of being simply a jpg or gif type image to include, a PHP script is needed. While we can allow dynamic images to be used (php), when this was previously turned on, it was abused by people linking to php scripts that were not images. Because this is a serious security risk, we were forced to turn that feature off. I brought this up earlier this week with the powers above me and will ask one more time; however, if it gets turned back on, the first abuse may result in it being turned back off.

As to the IM icons - yes, we have the ability to turn those on. The decision was made to leave them off because we would prefer people to interact on the forum so others can benefit from the questions and answers. If there is a huge disagreement with this decision, let me know and we'll reconsider.

As to displaying the author's image of choice -- we have avatars here, so I'm not sure what you are asking for on that one.

My final comment is that (in my opinion) goofy pictures of things don't make the site better. Rather it is the quality of the questions and answers. In that regard, CodeGuru is top notch. I've tried to push to avoid doing too much that gets in the way of the Q&A. Having said that, I also know that the displaying of dynamic images and such would be very beneficial for the FAQs and similar posts on the forum.

Did I miss anything? One thing is some of the addeg graphics under their user names. This is something we can do. If there are criteria that can be easily determined based on number of posts, reputation, time on the forum, etc., then we can add additional text or graphics under the user info. The "Power Poster" text is an example of this.

How to make CG better? Does any forum software validate? Does any coding site validate? I would be curious to know which coding site contains the most errors.
