    SQL 2008 Management Studio????

I just downloaded and upgraded to SQL 2008 Express and now my Management Studio stopped working. Its telling me that it only works with SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. I've downloaded the SQL 2008 w/ Tools and also all the Express Editions on a DVD image.

I cannot find a Management Studio for SQL 2008 ANYWHERE. Its really starting to piss me off. How are you supposed to design databases for SQL 2008 if there is no Management Studio?

The version of SQL 2008 that I downloaded says that it includes a graphical tool for managing and creating database in the description, but it does not install automatically, and if its an option install I don't know where they decided to hide it.

So is this like the old version of SQL where you have to download the full trial version to install the tools, and after the SQL trial expires you continue using the tools?

I remember having to do that before, SQL expired but the tools didn't.

    Re: SQL 2008 Management Studio????

Well I don't have time to play with this, so I just uninstalled SQL 2008 and went back to SQL 2005 and now there is some type of bug that's preventing me from reinstalling SQL 2005. It says that I need to download SQL SP2 to prevent a compatibility issue with Vista. I went to Windows Update and downloaded SP2 a half of dozen times and each time I get:

    An unknown error has happened.
Got to love Microsoft. Their programs don't even work correctly on their own operating system.

The best part about the error is its description! Microsoft sure knows how to write an error description. Then I click the link that says "Get help for this error". After clicking the link I get:

An unknown error has happened. No information found for this error.
Now that I know what the problem is; I'll get right on fixing it!

I'm tired of dealing with Vista bugs and issues, its costing me too much money in development time. I decided to go back to XP. I'm in the process of formatting and reinstalling XP and I get the error message.

You cannot upgrade to Window XP Professional from this version of Windows. Please insert a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME CD and press F8 otherwise press F3 to exit setup.
Seems that once Microsft has you they HAVE you. I use to have XP on this machine. I upgraded to Vista and now its impossible to reinstall XP on this machine. Of course I don't have a 95/98 CD these operating systems are older then my mother.

I guess its time to download and upgrade to Linux. I've been thinking about it for a long time but putting it off. I think its about time.

If you really want to go back to XP, you could delete all hard disk partitions, then start from a virgin machine (reformat the hard disk)

This way the machine wont even know that Vista has been invented

Then install XP from a blank state (dont forget the service packs)

This is probably going to be easier than burning down the Microsoft House which unfortunately we all need to follow if we are going to make a career in IT

Also your signature wont look as good

    Re: SQL 2008 Management Studio????

I got everything back up and running again. I had already formatted the machine and that is why it wanted me to insert a Windows 95/98 CD so that I could use my XP upgrade CD.

Never did get SQL 2008 up and running though. I'm not even going there again after all the trouble it caused me last time.
