    Creating My Own Project

Hey, I have been looking at internships/jobs in the CPS field, mainly software development and I have noticed that many companies require that you submit some sort of "self started" project. I would expect companies to want to see some original code of mine and programs that demonstrate how I am able to solve complex problems but I havnt ever developed a serious project of my own creation.
I am kind of wondering what a self started project would be. Should this project be something that has never been done before in CPS? Could it be something like a Science Fair project? Or would it be something as simple as my own version of Microsofts Notepad? Anyone have topics that would be interesting as projects?
    Google is your friend.

    What is "CPS"?
C + C++ Compiler: MinGW port of GCC
Build + Version Control System: SCons + Bazaar
