XP can't see external hard drive
I have a Dell 1100 with a P4, 1.5 gb DDR3200, ATI Radeon 256 mb Video card, 80 gb harddrive. I tried running Win7 SR on it got everything working but did not like the results. Since the SR was set to expire soon, I decided to reinstall Win XP home. Everything seems to run ok except XP can't see an external hard drive. When I plug in and turn on the external drive, I get a new hardware found, installing hardware blurb then nothing. When I open Device Manager I see unknown device with no driver installed. Uninstalling device and letting XP find it again doesn't help. all my trouble shooting efforts did not help. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: XP can't see external hard drive
Can you see it inside of disk management?

Re: XP can't see external hard drive
It does not show up under disk management. It only shows up in device manager as unknown USB device with no driver installed.

Re: XP can't see external hard drive
what is the usb drive version? Maybe the only usb version 1.1 used in your system and your external drive is 2.0. for verifying your usb version and other computer repair guide and tips, please go to the following link

hope this helps.

Re: XP can't see external hard drive
It can still read it, but slower.
If you formatted in under Windows 7, then it might not be accessible. You can encrypt external media with a password, and XP can't open it.
