vb_printer_status_using_basic_io_functions

well, i am using
"open printer.port for output as #1 "
for printing in visual basic.
The problem is,that during printing, if i switch off the printer accidently, system hangs, without giving any message. I just want to read the status of printer, so that i can display a message.

Can any body help me, ITS URGENT !! thanks in advance !!
